[Fix] Windows 10/11 Taking Too Much Time in Loading Desktop After User Login

If you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11 operating system in your device and it takes several minutes in loading the Desktop after you sign into your account by entering your account password, this article will help you in fixing the issue.

[Problem] Windows 10/11 was Taking Long Time in Reaching the Desktop

Since a few days, I was facing a strange issue in one of my Windows 11 devices. Whenever I entered my password at login screen to sign into my user account, Windows 11 kept showing the login screen and the circular progress animation for several minutes and after that I could access the Desktop. Sometimes the waiting time was more than 5 minutes and it felt like Windows just stuck at login screen.

Sometimes, the Desktop was loaded after a few seconds but the device was very slower and I could barely use it. Everything was taking too much time in starting. After a few minutes, the lagging issue was resolved automatically and I could access and open all programs normally.

[Reason] Eset NOD32 was Slowing Down the System Startup Process

After a few hours troubleshooting, finally I was able to find the culprit behind this annoying issue. It was Eset Nod32 antivirus/security suite which was slowing down the startup process and causing this delay issue in loading the Desktop.

Actually Nod32 comes with a Startup Scan feature which automatically launches as soon as the user logins and that’s why Windows takes long time in loading the Desktop as Nod32 is scanning the hard disk, memory, etc.

Once I disabled the Startup Scan feature, my Windows device became faster and there was no delay or waiting time in accessing the Desktop after sign in process.

[Solution] Disable Eset NOD32 Startup Scan Feature

If you are also facing similar issue, check out your antivirus or security suite settings and make sure Startup Scan feature is disabled or set to low priority.

Since I was using Eset Nod32 antivirus, I’m going to share steps to disable its Startup Scan feature to fix slower loading of Desktop in Windows 10 and Windows 11:

1. Click on Eset NOD32 icon in Taskbar notification area or system tray. It’ll launch Eset main window on your screen.

2. Now click on Tools section in left sidebar. In right-side pane, click on Scheduler option.

3. You’ll see 6 or more tasks present in the list. Look for System Startup File Check task. There will be 2 tasks with this name. Look for the task which has User logon in its triggers description.

CASE 1: Disable Startup Scan Entirely

If you want to completely disable the Startup scan feature, uncheck this task. If you have set a password to access NOD32 settings, you’ll need to enter the password.

Restart your system and you’ll notice huge improvement in the loading of Desktop. Now Windows will load the Desktop almost immediately as soon as you enter your account password at login screen.

CASE 2: Modify Startup Scan Priority

If you don’t want to disable the Startup scan feature, you can change its trigger condition to not start immediately after user’s login. You can set the task to start when your system is idle.

Select the System Startup File Check task and click on Edit button.

Click on Next button 4 times until you reach to the screen to change scan priority.

Now select When idle option from the drop-down box given next to Scan priority option.

Click on Finish button.

Now restart your system and it’ll fix the slow loading of Desktop after login issue.

PS: There is also another startup scan task present in Eset scheduler which launches automatically at fixed interval, so you don’t need to worry about the above mentioned task which we disabled or modified.

  1. Sir, not only ESET, but almost major antivirus programs bit slow down overall performance. Security is very necessary, but no user wants to compromise performance. This subject is bit controversial, if Microsoft provides standalone application of Defender program with standalone update with some changes to Windows Firewall, then it will not necessary to purchase 3rd party Antivirus.

  2. ^^ Yeah. Actually slowing down overall performance a little bit is acceptable but adding 1 or 2 minutes delay to sign-in process is not acceptable.
