[Fix] Mozilla Firefox Keeps Crashing Constantly on Startup

Yesterday I faced a very strange problem with Mozilla Firefox web browser in one of my computer systems. Suddenly Firefox started crashing at startup. As soon as I tried to launch Firefox, it opened for a second and immediately closed. Then the traditional Mozilla Crash Reporter window opened with “We’re Sorry” message and options to send crash report to Mozilla servers.

The Mozilla Crash Reporter provided 2 buttons: Restart Firefox and Quit Firefox. Obviously, I clicked on “Restart Firefox” button. It again opened Firefox which immediately crashed on startup. Again Crash Reporter launched and the same process continued happening again and again.

After a few tries, Mozilla provided a dialog box to restart Firefox in Safe Mode. It also didn’t work. So Firefox was not opening/launching at all. It was just crashing continuously on startup.

I tried various solutions to fix this annoying issue such as restarting Firefox in safe mode with all add-ons disabled but it didn’t help. I also tried to temporary disable my security software program (antivirus and firewall) protection, it also didn’t fix the crashing issue. (Many times security software cause crashing issues in web browsers. So if you face a crashing issue in any web browser, first try to disable your security software protection. It works many times. It happens due to incompatibility issues between web browsers and security software new versions.)

In fact I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox but unfortunately it also didn’t fix the irritating crashing issue. Firefox kept crashing on startup.

At the end I tried my ultimate solution which I always try whenever Firefox starts giving issues in any of my computer machines and it worked perfectly. It fixed the crashing issue and Firefox started opening fine.

Today in this tutorial, I’m going to share my ultimate solution to fix all kind of crashing problems in Mozilla Firefox web browser. If you also face Firefox crashing problem in your computer and Firefox crashes at startup/launch time or while opening websites or tabs, this solution will fix Mozilla Firefox in your computer.

So let’s share our solution to fix Firefox crashing problems:

STEP 1:

Press WIN+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box. Now type %localappdata% and press Enter key.

It’ll open “C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Local” folder in Windows Explorer.

STEP 2:

Now double-click on “Mozilla” folder present in “Local” folder. Now navigate to “Firefox\Profiles” folder. Under “Profiles” folder, you’ll see a folder with name “Random_Numbers_Letters.default” folder. In our computer the folder name was “3ssgkt6r.default”. The folder name is randomly generated at installation time. So the folder name will be different in your computer but the folder name will end with .default string.

STEP 3:

Inside the .default folder, you’ll see several folders.

Select following 4 folders:

  • cache2
  • jumpListCache
  • OfflineCache
  • startupCache

STEP 4:

After selecting above mentioned 4 folders, press Delete key on your keyboard. Don’t worry. These folders contain cache data only. You’ll not lose any important data such as cookies, favorites, custom settings, etc.

Deleting these folders will clear the startup cache and other cache such as jumplist items, etc.

That’s it. Now try to open Firefox and it’ll open without any issues. Now Firefox won’t crash on startup any more.

PS: This solution will also make Mozilla Firefox opening/launching faster in your computer.

  1. Thanks. It worked for me. I was using stable and nightly builds both and only stable version was crashing at startup. I tried everything but didnt work. Your solution fixed it. Thumbs up.

  2. Yesterday Firefox automatically updated itself to 63.0 (64bit on Windows 10 1803).
I am having mouse and keyboard problems. Mouse cursor stutters, freezes and jumps unnecessarily. Arrow keys on Keyboard are not working as they should be.
I could not reproduce the problem in Chrome or Opera. It is a firefox problem. Tried everything including Multiple PC reboots without success. Can you please look into it?

  3. Thank you for your wisdom oh great one!

Without you publishing this information I would have eventually given up, so thank you.

  4. Thanks so much! After hassling with Firefox forever, through countless ‘Firefox Not Responding’ messages, even after many Firefox resets, I was about to give up and use another browser. Followed the easy instructions here, about an hour ago, and Firefox is smokin’!!

  5. Thanks. Was tearing out my hair until I found your fix. Worked like a charm. You are a grand wizard.

  6. Hi, I painstakingly tried this, firefox continues to crash on startup. I did the remove prefs.js just before this. I have re-installed firefox three or four times as well to no avail.

  7. deleting folders with “cache” and all the pref.js in %appdata% (instead of local) fixed it for me.
