Check These Video Formats Your New LED TV Must Support

We all have Televisions in our home, offices and shops. Now-a-days almost everyone purchases Smart TV which comes with Internet and USB drive support so that users can browse websites and apps to watch their favorite TV shows, movies and web series.

If you are planning to buy a new smart TV or a TV with USB drive support (so that you can watch movies and videos using your pen drive on TV), you must read this article so that you can get a perfect smart TV supporting all file formats.

I have created a list of few video file formats which are generally available on Internet, DVDs and USB drives and you might watch these video formats on your TV set in future. So your new TV must support these selected video formats so that you can enjoy all your favorite videos and movies on your TV set without any issue.

Whenever I purchase a new TV set or my relatives, friends, colleagues purchase new TV set, I always test these video formats in the new TV set to make sure that the new TV set properly supports these video formats.

I carry these video files formats on my USB drive and I just need to attach the USB drive to new TV set and then I can play and check whether the TV set supports all video formats or not.

Following are the list of video formats which you should check in your new TV set before buying:

  • AVI
  • MOV
  • MP4
  • MPG or MPEG
  • MKV
  • WMV
  • FLV
  • VOB
  • 3GP

AVI, MOV, MP4, MPG/MPEG, MKV and WMV are the most popular video formats on Internet. If you download a video or movie (legally of course) from a website, it’ll be 100% available in one of these file formats. So your new TV set must support these video formats. If your new TV doesn’t support all these formats, at least it should support AVI, MP4, MPG/MPEG and MKV formats. If it still doesn’t support these video formats, choose a different TV which supports these video formats.

FLV is Flash Player file format which is used by many websites to stream videos and live events. If you are planning to browse websites to watch videos and online events, your smart TV must support this video format.

VOB format is used in DVDs. If you have old DVDs of your marriage, parties, special events, movies, etc, you can copy the DVD files on your USB drive and then attach the USB drive to your new TV and watch the videos. Your new TV must support VOB format if you are planning to watch DVD content.

3GP was one of the most popular video file formats in good ol’ days of 2G Internet connection. All mobile phones used to record videos in 3GP format and there are so many 3GP videos available on Internet to watch. There are chances that you also have old 3GP videos recorded by you and stored on your USB drive or hard disk drive. So your TV must support this video format.

Now the question comes where can you get these video file formats to test on TV set? There are many websites which provide above mentioned and many other video file formats for free download in small sample size (Just search for free video samples or similar terms). You can download the above mentioned video file formats from those websites and copy them to your USB drive. Now when you go to purchase new TV set, attach your USB drive to new TV and try to play them on TV. If the video files play on the TV without any issue, your TV supports the video formats.

In my experience, Samsung TVs support almost all popular video formats. Sony TVs support less video formats.

  1. Thanks VG.

Can you do an article on Smart TV vs Android TV and their differences ?

The articles available are more confusing than helping.

  2. My Samsung TV supports most video file formats. It plays MP4 (H.264) videos fine. However, it can not play MP4 HEVC (H265) videos. It gives error “File format not supported” if I try to play HEVC videos.

I can also connect external HDD and play movies from it. It supports NTFS, exFAT and FAT format. I don’t know how many TV supports HDD but it’s a nice feature and every TV should have it.

  3. Is anyone aware of devices or brands that will read and playback x265/HEVCx265 codec encoded video files?.

As well, I thought with DLNA, i could just play an x265 file on my pc with VLC (VLC supports this codec) and direct wifi that to my television. Is that not the case?

Any input would be appreciated, I am not really a whiz with computers. Thanks.

  4. Hi there, I’m a video Editor, I’m using h264 , 25 frame format to play my video with USB drive , but the video will stop and play immediately, can you guide me how to solve and how to export my video
