[Tip] Speedup Start Menu Opening / Launching in Windows 10

One thing which I dislike in Windows 10 is the new Start Menu. No matter how powerful the computer system is, Start Menu always takes time in opening or launching. I have checked in several Windows 10 machines and Start Menu is always slower and takes seconds in appearing on screen.

The things go worst when we install a few 3rd party programs and their shortcut entries are added to Start Menu. It starts taking more time in opening due to extra added program shortcuts and entries.

The same thing happens when we have opened some program running in our Windows 10 computers. Start Menu takes more time in showing and it irritates a lot.

If you also think that Windows 10 Start Menu is slow and takes lots of time in opening or launching, this tutorial will help you.

Today in this tutorial, I’ll share a small tip to speedup Windows 10 Start Menu. This trick will make Windows 10 Start Menu faster and more responsive. Once you apply the trick, Start Menu in Windows 10 will open instantly without any delay. You’ll definitely notice a huge improvement in Start Menu launching time in your Windows 10 device.

Actually there are a few animations and eye candy effects which are used by Windows 10 Start Menu to launch and to display programs list. First an animation is used in displaying Start Menu on computer screen and then another animation is used to show programs list. If you look carefully at your computer screen while opening Start Menu, you’ll notice the animations and effects yourself.

These animations and special effects slow down Start Menu launching and that’s why Start Menu in Windows 10 takes time in showing on screen and displaying programs list.

To speedup Start Menu, we’ll disable/turn off these animations and it’ll fix the slower Start Menu problem in Windows 10.

PS: Disabling animations and eye candy effects improves overall system performance and if you disable these effects and animations, you’ll notice everything in your Windows 10 device faster and more responsive than before.

To speedup Windows 10 Start Menu, do as following:

1. Press WIN+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box. Alternatively you can also open it using WIN+X menu. Now type sysdm.cpl and press Enter. It’ll open classic System Properties window.

PS: You can add a permanent shortcut to classic System Properties in This PC context menu with the help of this tutorial.

2. Now go to Advanced tab and click on Settings button present under Performance section.

3. It’ll open another window. Now uncheck following 2 options under Visual Effects tab:

  • Animate controls and elements inside windows
  • Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing

4. Apply the changes and try to open Start Menu by clicking on Start button or by pressing WIN key present on your keyboard.

BONUS TIP:

If you want to speedup your Windows 10 computer and want to improve overall system performance, you can disable following other options present in System Properties window:

  • Animations in the taskbar
  • Fade or slide menus into view
  • Fade or slide ToolTips into view
  • Fade out menu items after clicking
  • Save taskbar thumbnail previews
  • Show shadows under mouse pointer
  • Show shadows under windows
  • Show translucent selection rectangle
  • Slide open combo boxes
  • Smooth-scroll list boxes
  • Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop

It’ll make your Windows 10 computer super fast.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you disable “Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing” option in system properties, it’ll also remove the screen DIM effect used by Windows when you take a screenshot using WIN+PrtScn hotkey. It’s a known bug or issue which has been discussed in following article:

  1. Up to you, but the very first thing I do when starting fresh with the W10 is to disable the silly “animations.”

  2. I would love to implement the suggested change but my Performance Options ‘box’
won’t open enough to show the Apply button, presumably at the bottom.
This peculiar, to me, event has occurred in other Properties-type ‘boxes’ so I just give up every time. But I do hope you can suggest a fix, please.
    Regards,
    Michael

  3. ^^ Have you changed DPI scaling in your computer? Or changed screen resolution? It seems the windows are opening in larger size and can’t show full content on screen.

  4. Just cannot thank you enough for all your tips and tutorials. I live on your site VG, lol. Thank you for this great website.
