[Tip] Force Firefox to Always Underline Links on Web Pages

If you face problems while differentiating between text and links on some websites and you always wanted a way to easily recognize hyperlinks on web pages, you can now enable “Always underline links” feature in Mozilla Firefox and the web browser will always display links with underline on all websites which will help you in easily recognizing hyperlinks.

Following image shows hyperlinks with and without an underline so that you can easily understand what this new feature does in Mozilla Firefox web browser:

On the left side in the image, the web page is showing all links without any underline which makes certain links similar to the normal text. On the right side of the image, all the links have underline and it’s very easy to recognize hyperlinks on the web page.

In good old days, Blue color was the default color for all hyperlinks and almost all websites used variants of Blue color to show links. At that time, it was very easy to find and open links on web pages. But now-a-days many websites use totally different colors to style the links and sometimes the color and style of the links makes it very hard to recognize the links. Sometimes color blind people find it difficult to differentiate between a link and the text present on such websites due to similar or very light color used for links.

To overcome this issue, Mozilla team has added a new option to the latest 121.0 version of Firefox web browser which allows users to always show underline for links on all websites. Once you enable this new option, Firefox will underline all hyperlinks on all websites and you’ll be able to easily differentiate between links and text on any website.

If you are using Firefox 121 or later version and want to force the web browser to always underline links on websites, following methods will help you in turning on the new feature:

METHOD 1: Enable Always Underline Links Option Using Firefox Settings

This is the easiest method to enable always show underlined links option in Mozilla Firefox web browser:

STEP 1: Open Firefox Settings page by clicking on the main Firefox Menu (3-lines Hamburger menu icon) present at the right-side end of the toolbar and selecting Settings option. Alternatively, you can direct option Settings page using about:preferences command in address bar.

STEP 2: Now keep the General section or tab selected in left sidebar and in right-side pane, scroll down to bottom to Browsing section.

STEP 3: You’ll see a new option Always underline links. Enable this option and Firefox will immediately start showing underline on all links.

In future, if you decide to remove underline for links, disable the above mentioned option again.

METHOD 2: Enable Always Underline Links Option Using Firefox About:Config Page

Advanced users can also enable the always underline links feature using the hidden secret About:Config page in Firefox. You just need to modify a secret preference/flag mentioned below to enable or disable underlined links feature in Firefox:

STEP 1: Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the address bar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “Accept the Risk and Continue” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

STEP 2: Now type underline in Search filter box and look for following preference in the window:

layout.css.always_underline_links

STEP 3: To activate and enable the new underline links feature, set the above mentioned preference to true. To change the preference value, double-click on the preference and it’ll toggle the preference value.

That’s it. It’ll immediately enable underlines on all links in your Firefox browser.

PS: In future, if you want to deactivate and disable the underline links feature, set above mentioned preference to false.
