Now you can mute a tab in Google Chrome browser using a single mouse click on the Volume icon showing on the tab.

When you visit websites on Internet, there are many websites which contain videos playing automatically with sound. If you don’t want to hear any sound while visiting that website, tab audio muting feature comes to the rescue.

Tab Audio Muting is a new feature addition to Google Chrome 100 and later versions. It allows users to mute the tab including all other tabs containing same website pages using a single mouse click.

When you visit a website in Chrome and the tab starts playing audio, the tab displays a Volume icon which is known as Tab Audio Indicator. To mute the audio, you can click on the Volume icon on tab and it’ll immediately stop playing the audio.

The muting applies to whole site i.e. domain which means if you mute a tab, Chrome will also automatically mute other tabs running the same website pages.

The feature is a hidden secret feature which can be enabled by modifying a secret preference/flag in Chrome. By default, this tab audio muting feature is disabled and nothing happens when you click on Volume icon present in tabs. But if you manually enable the feature, the Volume icon becomes functional and you can click on it to turn on tab muting feature.

If you also want to activate and enable Tab Audio Muting feature in Google Chrome web browser, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type mute in the “Search flags” box.

  1. “mute” cannot be found when using the “search flag” box after typing chrome://flags/.

  2. ^^ Did you upgrade to version 100? The preference is present in Chrome 100 and later versions only.

  3. I had this option active and currently it disappeared and I don’t see anyone commenting about it. My Chrome is on the most current version. I’m going to Opera bye.
