This article will help you in enabling a hidden secret UI in Microsoft Edge which is currently under development and will be enabled for public in future versions. This new visual design or UI comes with support for Windows 11 visual effects (such as Mica effect, Acrylic effect) in menus, titlebar and toolbars along with rounded tabs.

Following screenshots show these new UI changes in Microsoft Edge web browser:

The rounded corners of tabs look very similar to the tabs present in Mozilla Firefox web browser.

In above screenshot, you can notice that the menu in Microsoft Edge features Acrylic effect which is a part of the Fluent design UI present in Windows 11. This new UI features acrylic material UI elements along with translucent blur and glass transparency effects.

If you also want to test drive these upcoming UI effects and changes right now in Stable version of Microsoft Edge web browser, you can enjoy them by modifying a few secret preferences/flags.

Enable Windows 11 Acrylic Effect in Microsoft Edge Menus

We told about this feature last year in following article:

[Tip] Enable or Disable Windows 11 Style Menus and UI in Chrome and Edge

At that time, the feature was controlled by a hidden flag called “#edge-pc-ui-integration” but now the flag has been removed from newer versions of Microsoft Edge.

Fortunately, a new flag or preference is available to enable the same feature. Following steps will help you in enabling Windows 11 visual effects in Microsoft Edge browser:

1. Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type windows 11 in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Enable Windows 11 Acrylic effect in menus

Enables support for the Acrylic effect in menus, if it is available on the system. Requires Windows 11 or later. – Windows

3. To enable new Windows 11 style redesigned menus and UI in Edge, select Enabled from the drop-down box for above mentioned option.

4. Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

That’s it. You have successfully enabled Windows 11 style visual updates in Microsoft Edge.

Enable Upcoming Redesign UI and Rounded Tabs in Microsoft Edge

As we told earlier, Microsoft is working on a redesign overhaul for Edge browser which will support Windows 11 visual effects along with Rounded tabs.

You can enable the redesigned UI right now using following steps to test drive the new UI changes:

1. Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type rejuv in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

3. To enable new visual redesign UI in Edge, select Enabled from the drop-down box for above mentioned option.

4. Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

5. After restarting Edge, click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar and select Settings option from the main menu. Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page. You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

6. Now go to Appearance tab and in right-side pane, you’ll see following 2 new options:

Show Windows 11 visual effects in title bar and toolbar (Preview)

Use rounded corners for browser tabs (Preview)

First option can be used to activate and enable the upcoming redesigned UI in Microsoft Edge. At the moment, it’ll not enable any major changes to the existing UI as the feature is currently work in progress. In future versions, we should expect more UI changes enabled.

The second option “Rounded corners for browser tabs” is an interesting feature. It can be enabled to activate rounded tabs in Edge similar to Firefox browser.

Enable desired option using the toggle button and Edge will ask to restart.

After restarting, you’ll be able to test drive the upcoming redesigned UI in Edge.

PS: To restore default settings, select Default option from the drop-down box given next to the above mentioned flags/preferences on Edge://flags page and restart the browser.
