[Tip] How to Restore Classic Download Panel at Bottom in Microsoft Edge

This article will help you in restoring classic Download Panel UI which used to show at bottom in Microsoft Edge web browser.

If you upgraded to new version of Microsoft Edge web browser and you tried to download a file from Internet, you might have noticed the new Download Manager UI. Now Microsoft Edge browser shows a new flyout menu or pop-up UI for its built-in Download Manager at top-right corner it its toolbar.

As soon as you click on a file to download, Microsoft Edge displays a new Download icon in its toolbar which shows a new flyout or popup containing information about the current download.

In older versions of Microsoft Edge browser, the Download Panel was used to show at bottom similar to a notification bar without showing any toolbar icon or flyout.

Following screenshot shows old classic Download Panel at bottom in Microsoft Edge browser:

There are some people who don’t like the new Download flyout UI and toolbar icon. They prefer the classic Download Panel at bottom.

I have received few emails from readers who want to get back the classic Download Panel at bottom in Microsoft Edge new versions.

Fortunately, it’s possible to bring back the old Download Panel in newer versions of Microsoft Edge web browser. There is a secret command-line parameter which can be used to get rid of the new Download flyout UI and restore previous Download Panel at bottom in Microsoft Edge.

If you also want to restore classic Download Panel UI in Microsoft Edge browser, following steps will help you:

1. Right-click on Microsoft Edge shortcut on Desktop and select Properties option. If Microsoft Edge shortcut is pinned to Taskbar, right-click on it and again right-click on Microsoft Edge option present on the jumplist and select Properties option.

If you launch Microsoft Edge from Start Menu, copy and paste following string in RUN dialog box and press Enter key:

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It’ll open Programs folder in File Explorer which contains Microsoft Edge shortcut. Right-click on it and select Properties option.

2. Once you open Microsoft Edge properties box, append following string at the end of the text string present in Target field:

To disable new Download flyout UI and restore classic Download Panel at bottom in Microsoft Edge, add following string:

--disable-features=msDownloadsHub

Remember there must be a blank space between existing text string and the appended string.

3. Apply the changes and launch Microsoft Edge using the shortcut.

That’s it. Now try to download any file from a website and Microsoft Edge will open classic Download Panel at bottom similar to old versions.

PS: In future, if you decide to restore default settings and enable new Download flyout UI in Microsoft Edge, delete the new extra text string from Target field in Microsoft Edge shortcut’s properties and save the changes.

  1. Again, a big thank you for this tut. I really and mean really don’t like the new flyout for Download in top right corner of Toolbar. Very annoying and too crowded. It is so much more convenient where it used to be at bottom left corner of Status bar.

keep up the good work. Two Thumbs-up!

  2. Great tip, thank you!
The flyout download box was yet another example of a MS “upgrade” that violates any sort of workability or common sense. Why would I want my downloads to obscure screen information and then disappear if you click on another app? Or worse yet pin them to the right and they reduce your screen size by about 25%?
I am happy once again that they appear at the bottom where it worked well and didn’t block anything…

  3. Hi,
I followed all the steps, and the downloads are still in the upper right corner.
What went wrong? I used a space, copied and pasted the string, hit apply.

  4. Hello
Doesn’t work on my PC either. Win 10 Pro.

Any ideas why it won’t work?
