[Tip] Enable or Disable Notes for Passwords in Google Chrome

In Google Chrome 108 and later versions, users can add personalized notes while saving passwords. This article will help you in enabling or disabling this new notes for passwords feature in Chrome browser.

In newer versions of Chrome web browser, you can save a custom note for each saved credential in the Password Manager. These notes and passwords are displayed on a sub-page protected by authentication. You can add notes for all saved passwords as shown in following screenshot:

Google Chrome team is rolling out notes for passwords feature in phases. Some Chrome users have already received the new notes feature in their browser and some are still waiting for it.

Now there might be two types of Chrome users:

  • One who received the notes for passwords feature in Chrome but didn’t like it and now want to disable it.
  • Second who haven’t received the new notes for passwords feature yet and want to activate and enable it right now.

Google Chrome team has provided a hidden secret preference/flag which can be used to enable or disable the new notes for passwords feature manually in Chrome browser.

If you want to enable or disable the notes for passwords feature in Chrome, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type notes in the “Search flags” box.

Look for following option in the results:

Enables a note section for each password in the settings page. – Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, Fuchsia, Lacros

3. To activate and enable the new notes for passwords feature in Chrome, select Enabled from the drop-down box for the above mentioned option.

To disable the new notes for passwords feature in Chrome, select Disabled from the drop-down box for the above mentioned option.

PS: You can also select other available options “Enabled – Authentication expires after 1 minute/5 minutes of inactivity” from the drop-down box if you also want to customize authentication expiry period.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. You have successfully enabled/disabled new notes for passwords feature in Chrome.

PS: In future, if you decide to restore default setting in Chrome, select “Default” option from the drop-down box for above mentioned option and restart the browser.
