Play Dinosaur Game and Open Websites in Chrome Side Panel

This article contains a very useful trick which will help you in revealing a hidden secret feature in Google Chrome‘s Side Panel to play Dinosaur game or open websites in the sidebar while opening regular webpages in the main browser window.

Following screenshot shows Dinosaur game running inside the Side Panel in Chrome browser:

You can also open websites in Chrome’s Side Panel while working on other webpages in the main window as shown in following screenshot:

We can also open internal or built-in pages in Chrome Side Panel like Chrome://flags, etc as shown in following screenshot:

The best thing of this trick is that you can access Chrome Settings in the Side Panel while opening websites in the main browser window as shown in following screenshot:

All this can be done by activating “WebView” feature in Chrome Side Panel.

Google Chrome 108 and later versions come with this hidden secret feature which can be enabled to play Dinosaur game or open websites and built-in pages in Chrome’s Side Panel. This feature is disabled by default and interested users can activate and enable it by modifying a hidden secret preference/flag.

If you also want to enable WebView feature in Chrome and want to play Dinosaur game in Chrome sidebar, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type webview in the “Search flags” box.

Look for following option in the results:

Adds a side panel option to load arbitrary web content, with a URL bar. – Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, Fuchsia, Lacros

3. To activate and enable the WebView feature in Chrome, select Enabled from the drop-down box for the above mentioned option.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. You have successfully enabled hidden secret WebView feature in Chrome.

5. Now click on the Side Panel button in Chrome toolbar to show the Side Panel. Once the Side Panel is added, click on the drop-down list and select WebView option.

Now you are all set to play Dinosaur game in the Side Panel.

To open websites or internal pages, type their URL in the tiny address bar given inside the Side Panel.

NOTE: To open websites, you’ll need to use full URL including https:// or http:// otherwise the URL will not work and Side Panel will open about:blank page. It’s a bug which will be fixed in future Chrome versions.

PS: In future, if you decide to remove WebView section from Side Panel in Chrome, select “Default” option from the drop-down box for above mentioned option and restart the browser.
