[Tip] Enable 2-Line Title UI for URL Suggestions in Google Chrome Address bar

The latest stable version of Google Chrome 85 and later versions come with a hidden secret address bar feature which is disabled by default. Interested users need to manually activate and enable the feature.

Now you can enable Chrome address bar (also known as Omnibox or URL bar) to show web page titles along with web page URLs in a 2-line or 2-row view as soon as you start typing in the address bar.

Following screenshots show some examples of the newly designed or tweaked address bar in Chrome:

This feature has been named as Omnibox Rich Autocompletion. The feature is currently under development and testing, that’s why Chrome team has not enabled it by default and advanced users need to activate it manually.

If you also want to enjoy the new look of Chrome address bar, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type Autocompletion in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Omnibox Rich Autocompletion
Allow autocompletion for titles and non-prefixes. I.e. suggestions whose titles or URLs contain the user input as a continuous chunk, but not necessarily a prefix, can be the default suggestion. Typically, only suggestions whose URLs are prefixed by the user input can be. The potential variations toggle 4 params: 1) ‘Title UI’ displays titles, 2) ‘2-Line UI’ includes titles (and URLs when autocompleting titles) on a 2nd line, 3) ‘Title AC’ autocompletes titles, and 4) ‘Non-Prefix AC’ autocompletes non-prefixes. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS

Default” is disabled i.e. the feature is disabled. You can select any option from the drop-down box. You’ll need to select each option one by one and restart Chrome to check the output.

In my opinion, the best option to select is “Enabled Title UI, 2-Line UI, Title AC, & Non-Prefix AC” if you want all feature enabled together. It’ll activate the 2-line UI in Chrome address bar.

If you want single line UI in address bar and both web page title and URL showing, then select “Enabled Title UI, Title AC, & Non-Prefix AC” option from the drop-down box.

4. After changing option, Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

PS: If you want to restore default settings, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.
