[Windows 10 Tip] Remove “Share with Skype” Option from File Context Menu

Recently when I upgraded to latest Windows 10 version, I noticed a new option added to all files context menu (the menu which appears when you right-click on a file) in Windows Explorer.

Whenever I right-click on any file in File Explorer, I get a new option “Share with Skype” in the context menu as shown in following screenshot:

I like clean and minimal context menus and the new option was not useful for me. I find it annoying, so I decided to remove it using Registry Editor. After a few minutes I was able to find the location of required registry key and finally I got rid of the new context menu option.

I think the new versions of Skype automatically add the context menu option “Share with Skype” to file context menus in Windows 10.

If you also want to disable or remove “Share with Skype” option from file context menu in Windows 10, following steps will help you:

1. Press WIN+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box. Now type regedit and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PackagedCom\Package

3. Under Package key, look for a key which contains Microsoft.SkypeApp in its name. In one of my machines, the key name was following:

Microsoft.SkypeApp_15.63.76.0_x86__kzf8qxf38zg5c

Remember the key name will be different for different Skype versions installed in your computer system.

4. Under Microsoft.SkypeApp_15.63.76.0_x86__kzf8qxf38zg5c or similar key, go to following key:

\Class\{776DBC8D-7347-478C-8D71-791E12EF49D8}

5. In right-side pane, look for DllPath string which contains Skype\SkypeContext.dll as its value. That is the main key which is responsible behind showing “Share with Skype” option in file context menu.

6. Double-click on DllPath and clear its value i.e. delete its value and click on OK button.

That’s it. Now try to right-click on any file and you’ll no longer see “Share with Skype” option in context menu.

PS: If you decide to restore the option later, set value of DllPath to Skype\SkypeContext.dll again.

IMPORTANT:

In older Windows 10 or Skype versions, you might need to delete following key to get rid of “Share with Skype” option:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\ShareWithSkype

As soon as you delete the key, it’ll remove the option from context menu.

BONUS TIP:

You can also add {776DBC8D-7347-478C-8D71-791E12EF49D8} to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked key and it’ll prevent Skype from adding its option to context menu.
