[Tip] Enable “New” Tag or Badge on Menu Items in Google Chrome

Just like Windows 10 shows “New” tag or badge on newly installed programs and apps in Start Menu, Google Chrome team has also decided to show a similar “New” badge on menu items which are new and provide new functionality to the user.

Currently the feature is under development and testing and that’s why it’s disabled by default. Interested users need to manually activate and enable it. The feature can be enabled in latest stable version of Google Chrome 85 and later versions.

UPDATE: In newer versions of Chrome, “New” badge feature comes enabled by default. If you want to disable it, following tutorial will help you:

[Tip] Remove “New” Badge or Label from Menu Items in Google Chrome

The “New” badge will help users in identifying newly added features and options to Chrome. Currently the feature provides very limited functionality which will be improved in future versions of Chrome.

Following screenshot shows the “New” badge showing on “Add tab to new group” option in tab context menu in Chrome:

If you also want to test drive the feature right now, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type badge in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Enable ‘New’ badge on menu items
When enabled, allows ‘New’ badge to help users identify menu items which access new functionality. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS

3. To enable “New” badge on options, select Enabled from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. You have successfully activated and enabled the “New” badge feature in Google Chrome. Now you’ll see “New” badge on newly added options.

PS: If you want to disable and remove “New” badge in future, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.
