[Tip] Disable Scroll Below Last Output Line in Command Prompt in Windows 10

If you work frequently in Command Prompt (or Console) in Windows 10, you might have noticed that the Command Prompt window allows unlimited or infinite scrolling even below the last output line. In other words, you can use the scroll bar given at the right-side of Command Prompt window to scroll anywhere (within Console buffer of course) even after the last output text disappears and a blank window continues.

Following animated image shows scrolling below the last output line in Command Prompt window:

This feature is called “Scroll Forward” in Command Prompt. Many people consider it as a bug or issue as the scrolling should not be done below the last output line.

Many readers have asked me how to fix this issue. Recently an AskVG reader shared the same problem with me. He also wanted to turn off this annoying behavior of Command Prompt.

Fortunately, Windows 10 allows users to enable/disable this feature in Command Prompt. If you also want to get rid of this scrolling bug, this article will help you.

Following steps will help you in disabling scroll forward feature in Command Prompt in Windows 10 which will prevent or restrict Command Prompt window to scroll below the last output line:

1. Open Command Prompt. Right-click on the title bar and select Properties option.

2. It’ll open Command Prompt properties window. Now go to Terminal tab.

3. Here you’ll see “Disable Scroll-Forward” option which is unchecked by default.

Enable or check the option and click on OK button.

That’s it. Now Command Prompt will only scroll to the last output line.

BONUS TIP:

In the same Terminal tab, you can also customize and change cursor shape, cursor color and terminal window colors.
