[Opera Bug Fix] Ctrl+Shift+Home and Ctrl+Shift+End Hotkeys Stopped Working in Text Editors

This is a very very weird bug related to Opera web browser and text editor programs such as Notepad, Wordpad and other 3rd party software such as Notepad++. Recently AskVG reader “Robert Angelo” contacted us regarding this issue:

This comment is about word processors and the Opera browser.

1. With Opera closed, open a Wordpad document. Test the SHIFT+CTRL+Home and SHIFT+CTRL+End commands.

2. Open the Opera browser.

3. Go back to Wordpad. Test those two commands again.

They don’t work until you close the Opera browser.

Very strange.

Let’s discuss the issue in details with a working fix or solution:

PROBLEM SYMPTOM:

Many people use following keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys in text editors such as Notepad, Wordpad to select text:

    • Ctrl+Shift+Home
    • Ctrl+Shift+End
    • Ctrl+Shift+Page Up
    • Ctrl+Shift+Page Down

Ctrl+Shift+Home and Ctrl+Shift+Page Up hotkeys are used in text editors to select the text from the current cursor position to the start of the document.

Ctrl+Shift+End and Ctrl+Shift+Page Down hotkeys are used in text editors to select the text from the current cursor position to the end of the document.

Suddenly the above mentioned hotkeys stopped working in all text editing programs whether the built-in text editors such as Notepad and Wordpad or 3rd party text editors.

Users are unable to use these keyboard shortcuts to select text in their favorite text editor program. Nothing happens when they press Ctrl+Shift+Home, Ctrl+Shift+End, Ctrl+Shift+Page Up and Ctrl+Shift+Page Down hotkeys in text editors.

PROBLEM REASON:

This problem occurs if Opera web browser is running in user’s computer. If Opera browser is opened in computer and the user tries to use above mentioned keyboard shortcuts in any text editor program, they don’t work as expected.

Opera browser takes over the Ctrl+Shift+Home, Ctrl+Shift+End, Ctrl+Shift+Page Up and Ctrl+Shift+Page Down hotkeys and that’s why the hotkeys no longer work in other programs.

This problem occurs due to built-in extension called “Video Handler” in Opera browser. This extension is used for video pop-out feature in Opera browser.

So this problem is caused by Opera browser.

PROBLEM SOLUTION:

The fastest and easiest solution to fix this annoying issue is to close Opera and then use Notepad, Wordpad or other text editor software programs. If Opera is not running, it’ll not take over the hotkeys and you’ll be able to use them in other apps.

If you want to use Opera and text editors together, then you’ll need to follow a few simple steps to fix this annoying issue:

1. Click on Menu button in Opera browser and select Developer -> Task Manager option. Alternatively, you can press Shift+Esc keys together to direct launch Task Manager in Opera browser.

2. Now maximize Opera Task Manager window and look for “Extension: Video Handler” task.

3. Select “Extension: Video Handler” task and click on “End process” button.

PS: Sometimes you may need to kill Video handler extension process twice.

That’s it. As soon as you end task of Video handler extension, all above mentioned hotkeys i.e. Ctrl+Shift+Home, Ctrl+Shift+End, Ctrl+Shift+Page Up and Ctrl+Shift+Page Down will start working again in your text editor program.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

This solution works for the current session of Opera browser only. If you close Opera and then re-open it, the Video handler extension will relaunch and you’ll need to follow above mentioned steps again to terminate it. Also remember if you end task of Video handler extension, you’ll not be able to use video pop-out feature in Opera.

  1. It seems it is a very rare coincidence that someone uses these shortcuts and Opera together. 🙂
Even, most of my colleagues do not ever use ctrl+shift+end. This is why I have not found anything about this issue until now. It was very annoying every time when I wanted to use those shortcuts. Now I can!
    Thank you very, very much!

  2. Great solution! For a long time I could not understand why Ctrl Shift Home/End does not work, but thanks to your article now I know. Thanks!

  3. What!!!! IN THE NAME OF ODIN!!!
    What STUPIED BUG!!!!!
I hope that Opera fixes that soon!!!!

    THANKS A LOT!

  4. Hi

I can’t tell you how helpful this has been – I use Ctrl+Shift+End all the time in large Excel files and recently it had stopped working. I assumed it was due to switching to Office 365 and never considered Opera was the culprit! Thanks again!

  5. Thank you, thank you! I use ctrl+shift+end almost every day in Excel. Today it stopped working. Turns out that I had opened Opera earlier and left it up, which I almost never do. This has saved me hours of fiddling around!

  6. There is another workaround that should be more stable: you can delete from opera preferences file (it is a json file) the shortcuts CTRL+SHIFT+HOME/END.

See johnd78 answer to this thread:forums.opera.com/topic/34954/opera-shortcut-key-delete-history

Close Opera browser. Using JSONedit, delete the section “extensions” – “commands” in the Preferences file in the profile. Save changes. After that, you can use the keyboard shortcuts “Ctrl + Shift +” in third-party programs when Opera is running and “Ctrl + Shift + Del” to delete the history in the current Opera Stable version.

I tried myself both VG and johnd78 solutions, but the last one lasts more.

  7. Thanks so much for this! I have agonized for some months now trying to figure out why Microsoft would remove this amazing shortcut that I use all the time. Strangely, I found that while most of the time it did not work, sometimes…it worked! At the time, I thought it was because I was using an older (like older than 2 years) Microsoft Word file, but I never considered Opera was the culprit. I use this all the time together with web browser, so my Opera allegiance may be about to end! Thanks VG! Truly helpful!

  8. THANK YOU so much for this – it has been driving me c.zy.

I really appreciate you publishing these findings, and the underlying detail (I’m in IT, and always want to know the “root cause” to issues).

You are my personal hero today.

  9. With JSONedit you just need to change the value “global” from “true” to “false” for all six keyboard shortcuts: voila! no more interference with other programs (works for me).

  10. Wow, I would never have guessed. This has been plaguing me for maybe months, both at work and at home, and I could never work out what the cause was. I only use Opera at work briefly, so I don’t know how I was seeing that often, while I tend to have it open at home lately.

  11. Hi there,

It works. I just killed the opera process. and the function came back.
    Thank you very much.
    Helps a lot!!!!
