The SMS contained following website link:

Cyber Swachhta Kendra

Since the website is a .gov.in, it’s a genuine government website for sure. I knew my mobile phone was not infected with any botnet malware or virus. It seems the message was sent in bulk to many mobile phone users to make them aware and introduce this new initiative from Indian government.

The homepage of Cyber Swachhta Kendra website mentions that “Cyber Swachhta Kendra” (Botnet Cleaning and Malware Analysis Centre) is a part of the Government of India’s Digital India initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It has been developed to create a secure cyber space by detecting botnet infections in India. It helps in notifying, cleaning and securing systems of users and prevents further infections. The “Cyber Swachhta Kendra” operates in close coordination and collaboration with Internet Service Providers and Antivirus companies.

The website contains a specific section about botnet malware infection and removal tool. It mentions that the visitor’s computer system might be infected with malware called “Bot” and could have become a part of a botnet. If it happened, the visitor’s computer might be used to attack on other devices, send out spam and the information on visitor’s computer might be stolen. Botnet is a group of computers controlled by cyber criminals to spread malware and launch other malicious attacks on their targets.

The website provides a Bot Removal Tool to scan infected computers and remove the malware. The Bot Removal Tool has been developed by Quick Heal company which is a popular antivirus company.

  1. Yes, I also received this message.
Now I am extremely surprised that some antivirus brands providing portable tools to remove malware which also works in safe, also works in pen drive, no needs of installation or boot.
My question “Portable Tools are really good to remove malware as compare to installed antivirus, even if antivirus is registered(paid) edition?”

  2. ^^ Portable security tools can’t compete with regular installed security tools. Portable tools can be carried on USB drives but you should always install a good antivirus program and firewall in your computer system.

  3. Hi Vishal,

In continuation with your last response about need for a good antivirus program in computer .. can you comment on whether the inbuilt windows defender is a good option for the same ??

  4. ^^ If you are going to use the system for online activities, I’ll suggest to install a 3rd party popular antivirus along with a firewall.
