[Fix] Blurry Text of News and Interests (Weather) in Windows 10 Taskbar

Recently we told you that many Windows 10 users are facing a very annoying text display issue with the newly introduced “News and Interests” feature.

A few days back, Microsoft added a new feature called “News and Interests” to many Windows 10 devices via a new Windows update. When this update is installed in a Windows 10 device, it automatically adds “News and Interests” feature to the operating system.

“News and Interests” feature adds a new weather forecast widget or button to Windows 10 Taskbar near notification area or system tray. When you hover your mouse cursor over the weather button or clicks on it, a new flyout panel opens showing latest news stories feed as shown in following screenshot:

Lots of Windows 10 users have complained that the text or font displayed by the weather widget looks blurry and hard to read. It’s a known issue which has been acknowledged by Microsoft and the company is working on a fix.

Following image shows the blurry or zoomed in text display issue encountered in News and Interests widget in one of our Windows 10 devices:

We posted about this issue in following article:

It’s unclear when will the new fix or patch become available via Windows Update and when we’ll get rid of this irritating problem.

But there is a very easy workaround to fix this issue and make the text shown by “News and Interests” or weather widget sharp and clear.

We can fix the issue by setting custom DPI scaling settings. If we set the DPI scaling to 125%, the text becomes absolutely perfect as shown in following image:

If you are using “News and Interests” feature in Windows 10 and want to fix the blurry text issue, following steps will help you:

PS: Increasing DPI scaling will increase the text and UI size everywhere in Windows 10 but in my opinion, it looks better if you have a high resolution screen.

STEP 1:

We’ll need to open Display settings page to change DPI scaling. You can directly open it by right-clicking on Desktop and select Display settings option.

Alternatively, you can also open the page using Windows 10 Settings app. Open Settings app by pressing WIN+I keys together and then click on System section. It’ll open Display settings page.

PS: You can also launch Display settings page using “ms-settings:display” command in RUN dialog box as mentioned here.

STEP 2:

On Display Settings page, look for Scale and Layout section in right-side pane. It’s set to 100% (Recommended) by default.

Click on the drop-down box and select 125% option from the list.

That’s it. It’ll immediately change the DPI scaling to 125% and you’ll notice everything is a little bit larger than before.

Now look at the text displayed by “News and Interests” button in Taskbar and you’ll notice that the text has been fixed and looking perfect now.

STEPS to Restore Default Settings:

In future, if you decide to restore default settings and elements size, set the DPI scaling to 100% again using Display Settings page.

  1. I’d just like to be able to customize it more, like getting rid of top stories and only displaying what I’ve selected. Since it doesn’t do that, it’s disabled.
