[Firefox Tip] Block About:Config, About:Addons, About:Profiles and About:Support Pages

Mozilla Firefox web browser comes with lots of About pages which can be used to access important preferences and options. For example, users can open about:addons page to manage extensions, about:profiles page to manage user profiles, about:support page to access troubleshooting information. There is one special about page called about:config which is an advanced configuration page. It allows users to enable/disable features in Firefox browser. This page has been developed for expert and advanced users only.

Sometimes you may want to restrict other users from accessing one or more About pages in Firefox web browser for security or other reasons.

Today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to restrict/prevent or stop other people from accessing following About pages in Mozilla Firefox web browser:

  • About:Config
  • About:Addons
  • About:Profiles
  • About:Support

Once you block these pages in Firefox, no one will be able to launch and access these pages. Users will get following error page if they try to open these pages:

Blocked Page

Your organization has blocked access to this page or website.

Blocking these pages will restrict users from accessing these pages from all places. For example, if you block About:Addons page, users will be unable to open it using about:addons URL in address bar as well as using Add-ons menu or Ctrl+Shift+A hotkey. Same thing will apply to other About pages.

If you also want to restrict or prevent these pages in Mozilla Firefox web browser, following steps will help you:

1. First of all close Firefox web browser if running. Now press WIN+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box in Windows. Now type regedit in RUN and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

3. Create a new key under Policies key and set its name as Mozilla

4. Create another new key under Mozilla key and set its name as Firefox

5. Now select Firefox key and in right-side pane, do as following:

To block About:Addons page:

In right-side pane, right-click and select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value option. Set its name as BlockAboutAddons and set its value to 1

To block About:Config page:

In right-side pane, right-click and select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value option. Set its name as BlockAboutConfig and set its value to 1

To block About:Profiles page:

In right-side pane, right-click and select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value option. Set its name as BlockAboutProfiles and set its value to 1

That’s it. Now open Firefox and try to open the About page which you blocked using Registry Editor, you’ll receive the blocked warning page.

PS: In future if you want to restore default settings and want to unblock the About pages, simply delete the DWORD created in above steps.

NOTE: If you apply these restrictions, Firefox Options (about:preferences) page may start showing “Your browser is being managed by your organization” error message at top. Check out following tutorial for more information:
