[Fix] Your Browser is Being Managed by Your Organization Error Message in Mozilla Firefox

If you are getting any of following notification messages on Firefox Options (about:preferences) page, this tutorial will help you in fixing the issue:

  • Your organization has disabled the ability to change some options
  • Your browser is being managed by your organization

PROBLEM SYMPTOM:

You are using Mozilla Firefox web browser. When you opened Firefox Options page (about:preferences), you noticed following message displaying at the top of the page:

Your browser is being managed by your organization.

If you are using a testing or old version of Firefox, you may see following message on the page:

Your organization has disabled the ability to change some options.

Now you are worried who is managing your browser? Who has disabled or restricted you from changing Firefox options? Is your computer or web browser hacked?

It might be possible that you are using Firefox in a home PC or laptop and your computer is not connected to any network or not a part of any organization, then why this error message is showing in Firefox?

PROBLEM REASON:

First of all relax, calm down and understand that your computer and web browser are safe. Firefox is displaying this message because one or more policies have been applied on Firefox. Actually Firefox comes with policies support and you can enable/disable features in Firefox by applying different policies. For example, you can disable automatic updates in Firefox by implementing “DisableAppUpdate” policy. Policies support has been implemented in Firefox to restrict/prevent users from accessing certain features and functions in Firefox.

There might be 3rd party software such as antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall, security suites or Firefox extensions which applied some policies in Firefox without your knowledge.

When a policy is applied in Firefox, it starts showing “Your organization has disabled the ability to change some options” or “Your browser is being managed by your organization” error messages in Firefox.

You can check which policies have been applied in Firefox by visiting about:policies page in Firefox. This page shows a complete list of all policies existing in your Firefox installation as shown in following screenshot:

Policies in Firefox can be implemented and applied using Windows Registry or using a “policies.json” file in Firefox installation directory.

For example: [Firefox Tip] Block About:Config, About:Addons, About:Profiles and About:Support Pages

So the bottom line is that there are some policies applied on your Firefox browser which are causing this notification message showing on Options page.

PROBLEM SOLUTION:

If you applied some policies in Firefox yourself using an extension or software, then you don’t need to worry and you can ignore the message. It’ll not harm your computer or browser.

But if you didn’t add any policy and you want to disable the message from Firefox, following solution will help you in getting rid of this annoying message displaying on Firefox Options page.

If you also want to remove the notification message, check out following steps:

First we’ll need to find out which policies are currently applied on Firefox and then we’ll remove those policies. Once we remove all policies, the message will disappear from Firefox automatically.

METHOD 1: Using Registry Editor

1. Press WIN+R keys together to open RUN dialog box. You can also open it from WIN+X menu. Now type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox

3. Here Firefox is the main key which contains all policies applied in browser. We’ll need to delete Firefox key to remove all policies. Select Firefox key and press Delete key.

Close Registry Editor and launch Firefox. Now you’ll not see any notification or error message at the top of Options page.

METHOD 2: Using Policies.JSON File

1. Open Firefox installation folder in your computer (the folder where Firefox files are located such as “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox” folder in Windows, “Firefox.app/Contents/Resources/” in Mac and “firefox” directory in Linux which varies by distributions).

2. Now look for Distribution folder. This is the folder which contains policies.json file which applies policies in Firefox.

3. If you find Distribution folder, delete it. You can also delete policies.json file only.

That’s it. Now open Firefox browser and the message will no longer appear on Firefox Options page.

  1. @Vishal Gupta
Thank you!!! This helped! I use FF but they’re a pain in the ass sometimes. Today I open my computer and they’ve changed my start page and my (blank) tabs. Not to mention the “Your Organization has Disabled the Ability to Change Some Options in Mozilla Firefox” nonsense. 25 minutes of changing everything back that I could have used on something more enjoyable. Thanks again for your post. Very helpful.

  2. Followed your instructions
    deleted the Firefox Key
and restarted Firefox, yes that Worked only Problem is its not permanent! when system is rebooted it reinstalled the Import Enterprise Roots Certificate.

    regards
    Rodent

  3. I’ve deleted the registry item numerous times and it keeps coming back. Today I looked for the distribution folder under Mozilla Firefox. No folder. Any other suggestions to get rid of “Your Browser is Being Managed by Your Organization” If not, will delete AVG from my system

  4. Thank you. It’s good to be able to remove this restriction but it does not tell me what is actually responsible for the message. It might be something I have intentionally done earlier without realizing that it would produce this message but it might be something that I definitely do not want managed and out of my control.

  5. I have been looking for a way to get rid of your enterprise restriction. I looked again, and beside a lot of gab about Windows and Macs, I see nothing about solve this problem on a LINUX SYSTEM.

I own my own computer and am not a member or under the control of an enterprise or organization. I am my own system administrator!

Why can’t I get rid of this restriction???
