This tutorial will allow you to always hide or disable bookmarks bar on New Tab page and all other pages in Google Chrome web browser.

If you use Google Chrome web browser, you might be aware of the fact that the default Bookmarks bar (or Favorites bar) can be enabled or disabled using following ways:

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+B keys together to show or hide bookmarks bar quickly
  • Click on 3-dots menu and select/deselect “Bookmarks -> Show bookmarks bar” option
  • Open Chrome Settings page and turn on/off “Show bookmarks bar” option under Appearance section
  • Right-click on Bookmarks bar and uncheck “Show bookmarks bar” option

You can use any of above mentioned methods to show or hide bookmarks bar in Google Chrome toolbar.

But there is a very annoying issue related to bookmarks bar in Chrome. Even if you hide or remove bookmarks bar, it always appears on New Tab page (NTP). When you open Chrome or create a new tab, bookmarks bar is always visible on new tab page. It doesn’t respect your customized settings and Chrome always displays bookmarks bar on New Tab page.

BONUS TIP: It happens when you have one or more bookmarks in bookmarks bar. If you empty the bookmarks bar i.e. delete all existing bookmarks, the bookmarks bar will disappear from New Tab page as well.

Many Chrome users don’t like this behavior. They want to permanently disable and remove bookmarks bar from all places in Chrome including New Tab page. Many people don’t want to let others see their bookmarked websites. Anyone can see and open your bookmarked websites whenever they launch Chrome as the New Tab page will show all your bookmarks on the bookmarks bar.

Don’t worry! If you use Google Chrome browser and want to get rid of bookmarks bar from New Tab page, this tutorial will help you.

Today in this article, we’ll share a very small and easy way to hide/disable or remove bookmarks bar from New Tab page in Google Chrome web browser.

Check out following method to always hide or always show bookmarks bar on New Tab page and other pages in Chrome browser:

1. First of all close Google Chrome web browser if running. Now press WIN+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box in Windows. Now type regedit in RUN and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies

3. Create a new key under Policies key and set its name as Google

4. Create another new key under Google key and set its name as Chrome

5. Now select Chrome key and in right-side pane, right-click and select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value option. Set its name as BookmarkBarEnabled and set its value as following:

Set the value to 0 if you want to permanently remove and hide Bookmarks bar in Chrome including New Tab page.

Set the value to 1 if you want to always enable and show Bookmarks bar in Chrome including New Tab page.

That’s it. Now open Chrome and it’ll no longer display bookmarks bar on New Tab page and other webpages.

NOTE: Once you use this method, it’ll restrict users from manually enable/disable or show/hide bookmarks bar in Chrome. You’ll not be able to show or hide bookmarks bar in Chrome using Ctrl+Shift+B hotkey or using main menubar and Chrome Settings page. All options to show/hide bookmarks bar will be grayed out i.e. disabled.

PS: In future, if you want to remove this restriction and want to show bookmarks bar on New Tab page and want to be able to manually show/hide bookmarks bar, simply delete the above mentioned DWORD from Registry Editor.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you use above mentioned method, Chrome Settings page may start showing “Your browser is managed by your organization” error message at top. Check out following tutorial for more information:

  1. Brilliant for my auto opening Chrome pages. Bookmark bar is gone!

    BUT…… when I open a new tab, it re-appears … 🙁
    Any tips?

  2. Google is an enormous TURD in doing this. The option should be easy and not require regedit to turn it on and off when you want.

The reasons are valid. If you’re letting someone see your screen, you don’t necessarily want them to see your bookmarks, and definitely don’t want anybody to be easily able to click on a bookmark and open any bookmarked site.

  3. Thank you!! My solution has been to copy and paste all bookmarks into “other bookmarks”, and stay away from the registry.
