How to Enable / Disable Power Bookmarks UI in Chrome Side Panel

UPDATE: Google has started rolling out the new enhanced Bookmarks Side Panel UI to all users starting from Chrome 114 version. This article will help you in enabling the new bookmarks UI right now if you haven’t received it yet. It’ll also help you in disabling the new Bookmarks UI and restoring classic Bookmarks UI in Chrome if you don’t like the new UI.

Google is working on a new redesigned UI for the Bookmarks Manager page present in the Side Panel in Chrome web browser. By default, the new UI is disabled or hidden but advanced users can enable the new Bookmarks UI using the instructions given in this article.

The new UI has been named as “Power Bookmarks” which will replace the existing basic version of Bookmarks page in Chrome Side Panel.

The new Power Bookmarks version contains following new features as compared to the existing basic version:

  • Ability to search bookmarks
  • Direct rename or delete the bookmark without using any additional dialog box
  • Sort bookmarks based on name or date
  • Change look of bookmarks list: Visual or compact
  • Create new folders
  • Bulk select and customize bookmarks
  • Add current tab as bookmark
  • New “Products” button which will get some special functionality in future versions

Google Chrome 111 and later versions come with this new Power Bookmarks version in Side Panel. As we mentioned in the beginning of this article, this UI is disabled by default and interested users can activate and enable it by modifying a hidden secret preference/flag.

If you also want to enable/disable new Power Bookmarks version in Side Panel in Chrome, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type power in the “Search flags” box.

  1. Worked flawlessly – thank you! Other searches including Google’s AI were ‘rabbit holes’.

  2. I don’t have the power bookmarks side panel option??? there is only power bookmark backend I disabled this but it made no difference?

  3. Chrome flags has changed in the last few weeks; I cannot find the Power Bookmarks Side Panel option, and also cannot find the thing that used to allow me to set downloads to appear at the bottom of my browser. This is extremely annoying, as the “All Bookmarks” folder takes up space that was occupied by one of the bookmarks I use EVERY DAY that I now have to access by more clicks. And I download PDFs at work constantly, and now I have to hover at the top to click on them really quickly before they disappear. Why is Chrome doing this to us? Why do they think they know what we want, instead of giving options for people who DON’T want to do it their way?
