In past, there was already a WhatsApp desktop app (old) available for Windows but it came with some limitations or restrictions such as your mobile phone was required to be online as the desktop app was actually mirroring WhatsApp from your smartphone. Also the old app was very slow as it was developed using Electron framework which is used to wrap web-based version in software programs. So basically WhatsApp was providing its web version inside the desktop app, that’s why it provided very limited functionality.

Now the new desktop app of WhatsApp is a native UWP (Universal Windows Platform) app which is similar to other modern apps installed in Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices such as Mail, Calendar, Maps, Media Player, etc.

New WhatsApp desktop app is downloaded via Microsoft Store and comes with a fully functional UI just like any other Store app.

Since it’s a standalone app, it no longer needs your mobile phone online. You can use WhatsApp on your Windows PC without connecting your mobile phone to Internet. You’ll keep receiving new messages even if your phone is offline i.e. not connected to Internet.

The new app supports native notifications displayed in Action Center. It also supports Light and Dark theme modes which can be enabled using Settings page.

The WhatsApp desktop app supports multiple devices (up to 4 devices). The new WhatsApp desktop app is very similar to the desktop app of Telegram.

WhatsApp desktop app is available on Microsoft Store. You can download and install it in your Windows 10 and 11 devices using Microsoft Store.

How to Use WhatsApp on Your Windows PC?

After installing WhatsApp in your Windows device, launch the app and it’ll ask you to connect your computer with your WhatsApp account in your smartphone. It’s a one time process only. Once you connect WhatsApp with your smartphone, you can use it on your computer without connecting with your smartphone each time.

To connect WhatsApp with your mobile phone, open WhatsApp in your smartphone, tap on 3-dots Menu button and select Linked Devices option. Scan the QR code given inside the WhatsApp desktop app using your smartphone and you’re done.

Now you can use WhatsApp on your Windows PC without any need of connecting your smartphone to Internet.

WhatsApp on computer works similar to your smartphone. You can send/receive messages, status, etc.

How to Disconnect or Remove WhatsApp on Your Computer?

In future, if you decide to disconnect your WhatsApp account and remove WhatsApp from your computer, you can simply go to 3-dots menu -> Linked Devices menu in WhatsApp on your smartphone and tap on the connected device and select Log Out option.

It’ll disable your WhatsApp account on your computer. Now you can safely uninstall or remove WhatsApp from your PC.

Important Thing to Remember Before Using WhatsApp on Your Computer

If you decide to use WhatsApp only on your computer system and keep your mobile phone offline, keep in mind that your linked device will be automatically logged out if you don’t connect your smartphone to Internet in 14 days.

So connect your smartphone to Internet within 14 days to keep you logged in inside WhatsApp desktop app. Or you’ll need to scan the QR code using your smartphone and login again in WhatsApp desktop app after 14 days interval.
