That’s why today I decided to create this article to clear all doubts regarding Windows 10 with S Mode enabled or sometimes referred as Windows 10 in S Mode. In this topic, I’ll try to provide as much information about S mode as I can and I hope that after reading this article, you’ll have a good idea about this new mode in Windows 10.

So let’s start from the beginning! Almost one year back, Microsoft announced a new edition/SKU of Windows 10 which was called as “Windows 10 S“. It was basically designed as a cloud-based operating system which was based on Windows 10 Pro edition. But this new edition contained some restrictions like users were restricted to install and use apps only via Windows Store. So users couldn’t install regular desktop software (Win32) programs in Windows 10 S. This restriction was implemented to provide more security and better performance to the users.

Many PC manufacturer companies launched new devices running on Windows 10 S edition. Microsoft also launched a promotional offer for Windows 10 S users to upgrade their devices to Windows 10 Pro edition by spending just $49.

In fact after some time Microsoft also released Windows 10 S installer to download and install Windows 10 S edition in any device. With the help of this installer users could test drive this new edition in their computers.

Microsoft Releases Windows 10 S for Download and Testing

But Windows 10 S edition was not very successful and was not able to grab much attention and Microsoft didn’t get good response from the users. After getting feedback and suggestions, Microsoft decided to discontinue Windows 10 S edition.

NOW Windows 10 S edition has been converted into the new S Mode. So Windows 10 S will no longer come in a separate SKU/edition. All Windows 10 editions will contain the new S Mode.

The new S Mode will be implemented in the upcoming Windows 10 feature update which is known as RS4 (Redstone 4). Rumors are that the upcoming feature update will be labeled as Windows 10 Spring Creators Update.

So once the new feature update is released to public, users will be able to purchase new devices containing Windows 10 with S Mode enabled. All Windows 10 editions such as Home (Core), Pro and Enterprise will come with S Mode enabled as per users choice.

Don’t worry! If you purchase a computer containing Windows 10 with S Mode enabled and you don’t like it, you’ll have the choice to switch out of (disable/deactivate) S Mode at no extra charge.

Currently it’s not clear whether the S Mode can be enabled/activated in a normal Windows 10 edition or not. We’ll be able to find out more about it only when the upcoming feature update is released which must be coming most probably next month.

So Windows 10 with S Mode enabled will work quite similar to Windows 10 S edition. Once the S Mode is enabled/activated, users will be able to run only UWP apps and if the user decides to opt out of S Mode, he’ll have an option to do this.

Let’s wait for the upcoming Windows 10 feature update which will contain this new S Mode.
