[Fix] Mozilla Firefox Crashing Problem on Windows

Mozilla Firefox is one of the best and most popular web browsers available for Windows operating system. The new versions of Firefox come with the new Photon Design UI which brings several UI changes, new features and enhancements.

If you are using the latest Firefox version, you might have noticed crashing problems on Windows operating system.

UPDATE: There is another known crashing issue in Firefox which has been acknowledged by Mozilla. If you use Firefox 32-bit version with Quick Heal Internet Security software, you may face crashing issues. Your tabs might crash repeatedly in Firefox. To fix this issue, disable “Browser Sandbox” feature in “Internet & Network” section of Quick Heal dashboard. It’ll resolve the issue. You can also switch to 64-bit version of Firefox if your computer system supports it.

Mozilla acknowledges that Firefox users might face crashing problem on Windows 7 if they are using accessibility services. But I have heard from readers that the crashing problem also occurs on other Windows versions such as Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10.

First let us know what are accessibility services? Accessibility service is a new feature in Firefox which allows 3rd party programs installed in Windows operating system to modify a web page content based upon user’s preferences. For example, assistive technologies for physical impaired people, extra unnecessary browser plugins installed by your antivirus and anti-malware security programs, assistive technologies to help users login, applications providing automatic web form filling and of course malware/adware programs which misuse the accessibility service to monitor users activities.

These accessibility services might impact Firefox performance and can cause performance and stability problems. Due to these accessibility services, Firefox may also crash sometimes. Many 3rd party applications can also use the accessibility services feature to keep an eye on your web browsing activities.

If you are using an assistive technology for physical impairment, then you should not disable the accessibility service feature. Otherwise the accessibility service feature should be disabled to improve performance, stability and security in Firefox web browser.

If you are using Firefox in Windows operating system and facing crashing problem while using accessibility services, you can fix the crashing problem by turning off the accessibility service feature.

Check out following steps to disable accessibility service feature in Firefox so that it doesn’t crash:

1. Open Firefox Preferences by clicking on Hamburger-style (3 lines) main menu button -> Options. Alternatively, you can open Firefox Options page by typing about:preferences in the address bar and press Enter.

2. In options window, go to “Privacy & Security” tab, scroll down and look for “Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser” option.

This option is disabled by default i.e. unchecked.

3. Enable the “Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser” option and close Options page.

That’s it. Now Firefox will no longer crash in your device.

PS: Sometimes Firefox may also crash due to incompatible or poorly programmed extensions/plugins. Open Add-ons Manager page by clicking on Firefox menu -> Add-ons. You can directly open it by pressing Ctrl+Shift+A keys together or by typing about:addons in the address bar. Now check Extensions and Plugins tabs. If you find any unnecessary extension or plugin installed, disable or uninstall it. You can also try to disable all installed extensions/plugins one by one to find out which one is causing crashing issues in your computer. Once you find the culprit, uninstall it. It should solve the crashing problems.

  1. i only have the standard firefox, and i can do nothing with it. if i open two windows it crashes. if i do ANYTHING the clock is going tick-tock until it finally goes down. this is very frustrating to me. i know not what to do except uninstall and install it again.

  2. Recently I discover that anytime I try to open Firefox Mozilla for browsing a small window opens making reference to drive C:\windows\system32\…….. and before I can read all the contents of the small window, it disappears, and Firefox is launched, and just remained launched without anything happening. If I type any address in the address bar, like bbcnews.com which is one of my common site I visit regularly and press the enter key, nothing happens. Even the common message of “Hand shank with bbcnews.com” that is usually displayed at lower left hand side of the browser page is no longer displayed. I uninstall the previously installed version 79 and installed the same version which I have just downloaded for the solution of the problem but the same problem remained.

Please what can I do to resolve this problem? Firefox is my favorite browser, although I have Google Chrome as well as Edge on my Dell Latitude E6320 windows 10 OS. Thank you for your response.

  3. ^^ Try following:

    1. Uninstall Firefox.
    2. Make sure its folder “Mozilla Firefox” does not exist in following directory:

    C:\Program Files
    C:\Program Files (x86)

    Is exists, delete it.

    3. Type appdata in RUN dialog box and press Enter. Now open all 3 folders present one by one (Local, LocalLow, Roaming). Make sure Mozilla folder doesn’t exist. If exists, delete it. I’m assuming you are not using any other Mozilla software such as Thunderbird.
