[Windows 10 Tip] How to Always Open Task Manager Maximized

If you want to always open Task Manager in maximized mode in Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1 or older Windows versions or you want to force Task Manager to always remember its window position and size, this tutorial will help you.

Recently an AskVG reader contacted me regarding following issue:

Please advise me how to force Task Manager to always run in a maximized window? Although I maximize the window after it is started, after closing, it forgets its size and when restarted it opens again in its default size instead of maximized one.

It’s true. When we launch Task Manager in Windows 10 using Ctrl+Shift+Esc hotkey or by right-clicking on Taskbar and select “Task Manager” option or using Taskmgr.exe direct command, it always opens in normal window size.

Even if we maximize Task Manager window and close it, when we again launch Task Manager, it forgets the previous window size and always starts in normal window size.

Following screenshot shows Task Manager running in default normal window size in Windows 10:

Many Windows 10 users want to force Task Manager to always open in maximized state (or full screen mode). If you also want to always launch Task Manager in maximized mode, following method will definitely help you.

Although it’s not possible to make Task Manager remember maximized state but we can resize Task Manager window to occupy full scree area and Task Manager will always remember its window size and position on screen.

SOLUTION:

So you just need to resize Task Manager window by stretching its border to all directions. Move your mouse cursor at the top-left corner of Task Manager window and the cursor will change to resize cursor. Now click and hold the cursor and drag it to the top-left corner of your computer screen and it’ll fit Task Manager window to the top-left corner. Similarly, move your mouse cursor at the bottom-right corner of Task Manager window and the cursor will again change to resize cursor. again click and hold the cursor and drag it to the bottom-right corner of your computer screen and it’ll fit Task Manager window to the bottom-right corner.

Now Task Manager will fit to the whole screen area. Close Task Manager and re-open it and it’ll now open in maximized state (kind of).

I know it’s a workaround but it’s the only way to force Task Manager to always open in maximized mode.

If you know about any other method, feel free to share it in your comment…

  1. A grand tip, thanks. And so simple. Have been vexed by my “search” screen never staying full sized. By applying this same stretching trick, now keeps its shape as well. Rgds.

  2. Yes, there is a way to do it. Though not as convenient as opening the Task Manager from the toolbar. You have to right-click open the Start Menu, find Task Manager in the list and… right-click it 🙂 It will open in a maximized window.

  3. I managed to solve it. Here’s the solution
    1. search task manager in the search box besides the window icon
    2. right click and select open file location
You should be redirected to the task manager’s shortcut
    3. Right click and select properties
    4. Under Shortcut-run select maximized, press ok
Done now simply send that shortcut to your desktop or pin it on taskbar
