What is BGAUpdate.exe Process Running in Windows 10 and 11?

If you noticed a suspicious process BGAUpdate.exe (BGA Update Pack) trying to connect to Internet or running in Task Manager in your Windows 10 or Windows 11 device, this article will help you in learning details about this process and should you disable or remove it.

Recently while working on my Windows 11 device, I noticed a weird process BGAUpdate.exe running in background. My firewall software displayed a notification alert that the unknown process was trying to connect to Internet.

As you can see in the above screenshot, the process executable was BGAUpdate.exe (x86) and it was labeled as BGA Update Pack. The process was signed by Microsoft Corporation.

If you also received similar notification from your firewall program or you discovered the process in Task Manager or File Explorer and now you are wondering whether BGAUpdate.exe is a virus or malware, the information given below will clear all your doubts.

What is BGAUpdate.exe Executable?

BGAUpdate.exe is not a suspicious process. It’s a genuine process downloaded and installed by Microsoft. This program or executable is downloaded by Microsoft Edge web browser. If you click on the executable name in firewall notification or search for the file in File Explorer, you’ll find the executable under following directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate\Install\

Following screenshot shows the BGAUpdate.exe executable (17.2 MB) present in Windows 11 File Explorer:

BGAUpdate.exe is a part of “Microsoft Bing Service” which is provided by Microsoft to bring improvements and features to Microsoft Edge such as Bing maps, Bing wallpapers, etc.

Microsoft Edge might also download the BGAUpdate.exe tool to install AI-powered services such as Bing Chat, Microsoft Copilot to users.

The executable is downloaded by Edge Updater tool and after installation, the file is automatically deleted from user’s device.

You might also see another similar executable file “BGAUpSell.exe” in your device which is also downloaded by Edge Updater tool.

Should You Disable or Remove BGAUpdate.exe Executable?

You don’t need to worry about the executable file as BGAUpdate.exe file is automatically removed by Edge Updater tool after successful installation.

If the file is not removed automatically, you can manually delete the file from the above mentioned folder.

Sometimes the BGAUpdate.exe file might be moved to C:\Windows\TEMP\ folder by Edge Updater tool. You can safely delete the file from TEMP folder.
