What is Microsoft Edge WebView2 (MSEdgeWebView2.exe) in Windows 10 and 11?

Microsoft Edge WebView2 is a control platform that uses Microsoft Edge browser as its rendering engine to display web contents in applications. App developers use WebView2 control to embed web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc in their apps.

So basically WebView2 is used in modern (UWP or Store) apps to use Microsoft Edge browser’s functionality to provide web components.

If you use Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365, many Office apps such as Outlook already use WebView2 control to provide features like Meeting Insights, Room Finder, etc.

WebView2 control requires WebView2 Runtime installed in the device. To help developers in distributing their apps easily, Microsoft launched Windows 11 bundled with WebView2 Runtime. In other words, Windows 11 already comes with WebView2 Runtime built-in.

Microsoft has also announced that it’ll start rolling out WebView2 Runtime to Windows 10 devices as well.

This is the reason, you see MSEdgeWebView2.exe running in Task Manager because the WebView2 Runtime has been installed in your device and running in background.

Is Microsoft Edge WebView 2 Safe or a Virus?

No. WebView2 is not a virus or suspicious item. As we mentioned above, it can be considered as a part of Microsoft Edge web browser. Windows 11 comes with WebView2 runtime preinstalled and Windows 10 devices are getting WebView2 runtime in phases.

If you are not facing any issues with WebView2 process, you should keep it running as it is used by many apps and programs.

You can check using Task Manager which process or program is using WebView2 in background. In Task Manager, go to Processes tab, scroll down and you’ll see Windows Widgets process listed. Expand the process by double-clicking on it and you’ll notice several instances of Microsoft Edge WebView2 running under it as shown in following screenshot:

  1. Some people may be compelled to uninstall msedgewebview2 for good due to various workarounds posted online, but in doing so it will result in system instability (been there, done that)

  2. I’ve been having issues lately with EdgeWebView running setup.exe in the background, which then eats up 100% of my disk I/O, making my PC unusable during this time. Just to click on the start button while it’s doing this will take 15-20 seconds to even open the start menu. I have had widgets disabled since I installed Windows 11, and I verified that it’s still off, and I don’t ever use Edge browser anyway (who are the people actually willingly using it?), but still getting this issue. As another user stated, “uninstalling msedgewebview2 results in system instability”…what’s the difference; systems are becoming unstable BECAUSE it’s installed/installing/updating to begin with…?
I think I’m just going to quarantine Edge browser and anything having to do with it, so that it can’t run in the first place.

  3. I’ve disabled the widgets on my taskbar (a few weeks ago), with multiple reboots since that time, and I still have ~6-8 instances of the msedgewebview2.exe processes constantly running. I’ve even used pskill.exe to kill those processes, but soon after (like within 2 seconds) they get regenerated. Any ideas?

  4. re-routed this little problem I have now not see this for days and my system is stable as anything some people love to panic but I dont I am using w11 with no tpm thats because I built around it my systems is more safer that way and yes I know tpm is part of the os but what can be programmed can be bypassed
