[Tip] Restore User Profile Icon on Toolbar in Microsoft Edge

If the user profile (also known as user account or avatar) icon has been moved to the title bar in your Microsoft Edge web browser and you want to restore the profile icon or button on previous toolbar position, this article will help you in moving the user profile icon back to the original toolbar position.

Today when I opened Microsoft Edge web browser in Windows 11, I noticed that the user profile icon or profile manager button was showing at the top-left corner on title bar. In past, the profile icon used to display on the toolbar near downloads, extensions and 3-dots main menu buttons.

Following image shows both new as well as old placements of user profile icon in Microsoft Edge web browser:

Now Microsoft has started rolling out the profile icon position change to all Microsoft Edge users. If you don’t like the new position or placement of user profile icon and want to put it back on the toolbar, following methods will help you:

METHOD 1: Change User Profile Icon Position Using Microsoft Edge Settings

Microsoft has provided a built-in option on Edge Settings page to customize user profile icon position in the web browser. You can put the profile icon on title bar or toolbar by turning on or off this option as mentioned in following steps:

STEP 1: Click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar and select Settings option from the main menu. Alternatively, you can directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

STEP 2: Now go to Appearance tab and in right-side pane, scroll down and look for following toggle option:

Just set the toggle option to OFF i.e. disable the toggle button to restore the profile icon back on the toolbar. Edge will require a restart to apply changes.

After restarting the browser, the profile icon will be restored on the old classic position on browser’s toolbar.

PS: In future, if you want to move the profile icon on new title bar position again, enable the above mentioned toggle option.

METHOD 2: Put User Profile Icon on Title bar or Toolbar in Edge Using Flag

There is also a hidden secret preference/flag available to enable or disable the new user profile icon position in Microsoft Edge. You can modify this secret preference to put the profile icon on title bar or toolbar using following steps:

STEP 1: Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

STEP 2: Now type minimal in the “Search flags” box.

Look for following option on the page:
