[Tip] Enable “Super Duper Secure Mode” in Microsoft Edge

The newer versions of Microsoft Edge web browser (version 96 and later) come with a brand new feature called “Super Duper Secure Mode” (SDSM) which has been implemented in the web browser to make it secure and safer. In this article, we’ll tell you how to activate and enable new “Super Duper Secure Mode” in Microsoft Edge web browser.

What is Super Duper Secure Mode in Microsoft Edge?

Super Duper Secure Mode is a special feature developed by Microsoft Edge team which can be used by Edge users to improve the security and get a secure browsing experience.

Super Duper Secure Mode was under development and testing phase since a few months and now the feature has been added to the public stable version of Microsoft Edge, so now anyone can enjoy Super Duper Secure Mode functionality.

How does Super Duper Secure Mode Work in Microsoft Edge?

Super Duper Secure Mode disables JIT (Just-In-Time Compilation) in V8 JavaScript engine inside Microsoft Edge. JIT is also known as “Speculative Optimizer” and was developed in 2008 to speed up tasks in JavaScript. Microsoft research shows that most of the vulnerabilities and security risks occur due to V8 JavaScript engine. According to Microsoft, disabling JIT can remove almost half of the V8 bugs which means less frequent security updates or patches.

Disabling JIT in Microsoft Edge doesn’t impact the overall browser performance. According to Microsoft testing, most of the times disabled JIT didn’t cause any changes in the performance. But disabling the JIT results in significantly lower scores during JavaScript benchmarks. Microsoft tests showed a decline of 58%. But most of the times, users should not notice this impact while browsing websites.

Currently, Super Duper Secure Mode disables JIT (TurboFan/Sparkplug) and enables CET (Controlflow-Enforcement Technology, a new hardware-based exploit mitigation from Intel). Please note that Web Assembly is not supported at the moment. Microsoft has plans to slowly enable new mitigations and add Web Assembly support over the next few months.
