[Tip] How to Enable or Disable “Efficiency mode” in Microsoft Edge

Newer versions of Microsoft Edge web browser (such as version 95 and later) come with a new feature called “Efficiency mode” to extend your computer battery life. In this article, we’ll learn how to enable or disable Efficiency mode feature in Microsoft Edge.

Once enabled, Efficiency mode shows its button (heart pulse) in Microsoft Edge toolbar which can be used to turn on/off the mode any time as shown in following screenshot:

BONUS TIP: If you don’t have the toolbar button, you can directly access Efficiency Mode or Performance flyout using edge://perf-center/hub or edge://perf-center URL in Edge address bar.

Efficiency mode is a new name of previous “Performance mode” feature introduced in Microsoft Edge. Performance mode was a hidden secret feature in Edge which was implemented to save device battery and minimize system resources. Performance mode was not enabled by default and we shared a trick to manually reveal and activate the feature:

Now “Performance mode” has been renamed to new “Efficiency Mode” which does similar job in Edge.

What is Efficiency Mode Feature in Microsoft Edge?

According to Microsoft’s official description of this new feature:

Efficiency mode will become active when your laptop enters battery saver mode to allow the browser to manage resource usage to extend the battery life of your machine. You will have four options when efficiency mode becomes active: Unplugged and low battery, Unplugged, Always, and Never. Note: This feature is a Controlled Feature Rollout. If you don’t see this feature, check back shortly as we continue our rollout.

Following is some more information about new Efficiency mode provided by Microsoft Edge web browser:

Efficiency mode helps minimize power usage to extend battery life by saving computer resources (CPU, memory). Benefits might vary depending on your device, applications, and individual browser habits.

How does it work?

Puts background tabs to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity, if sleeping tabs is on.

May cause videos to be less smooth, animations to slow down when you’re not interacting with the browser.

Since it’s a new feature, Microsoft is enabling Efficiency mode using controlled feature rollout mechanism which means the feature will be rolled out in phases.

How to Check Efficiency Mode Available in Microsoft Edge?

You can check whether Efficiency mode has been activated in your Microsoft Edge browser or not using Settings page.

1. Open Microsoft Edge and click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar and select Settings option from the main menu. Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page. You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

2. Now go to System tab and in right-side pane, look for “Turn on Efficiency Mode” option under Optimize Performance section.

If the option is present, it means you have Efficiency mode available in Edge browser.

If the option is not present, it means Efficiency mode is not available in your Edge browser.

How to Enable or Disable Efficiency Mode in Microsoft Edge?

If you got Efficiency mode feature but don’t like it and want to disable it, following steps will help you in removing Efficiency mode feature from Microsoft Edge browser.

Similarly, if you haven’t received Efficiency mode feature and want to enable it right now, following steps will help you in manually enabling Efficiency mode feature in Microsoft Edge.

1. Right-click on Microsoft Edge shortcut on Desktop and select Properties option. If Microsoft Edge shortcut is pinned to Taskbar, right-click on it and again right-click on Microsoft Edge option present on the jumplist and select Properties option.

If you launch Microsoft Edge from Start Menu, copy and paste following string in RUN dialog box and press Enter key:

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It’ll open Programs folder in File Explorer which contains Microsoft Edge shortcut. Right-click on it and select Properties option.

2. Once you open Microsoft Edge properties box, append following string at the end of the text string present in Target field:

To add or enable Efficiency mode feature in Microsoft Edge:

--enable-features=msPerformanceModeToggle

To disable or remove Efficiency mode feature from Microsoft Edge:

--disable-features=msPerformanceModeToggle

Remember there must be a blank space between existing text string and the appended string.

3. Apply the changes and launch Microsoft Edge using the shortcut.

That’s it. You have successfully enabled/disabled Efficiency Mode feature in Microsoft Edge.

How to Add or Remove Efficiency Mode Button in Microsoft Edge Toolbar?

You can also add a dedicated toolbar button for new Efficiency mode on Microsoft Edge toolbar. Similarly, if you already have Efficiency mode button on Edge toolbar and don’t want to use it, you can remove the button from Edge toolbar to free up space.

Following steps will help you in adding or deleting Efficiency Mode toolbar button in Microsoft Edge:

1. Open Microsoft Edge Settings page and click on Appearance tab in left sidebar. In right-side pane, you’ll see Customize toolbar section.

Now look for “Performance button” toggle option.

To add Efficiency mode button to Microsoft Edge toolbar, enable or set the Performance button option to ON.

To remove Efficiency mode button from Microsoft Edge toolbar, disable or set the Performance button option to OFF.

It’ll immediately add/remove Efficiency mode button in Microsoft Edge toolbar.
