[Tip] Enable or Disable System Notifications in Microsoft Edge

This article will help you in forcing Microsoft Edge web browser to use its embedded message center or Windows system notification center to show web push notifications sent by websites.

Now-a-days many websites push web notifications to users in all modern web browsers. These push notifications contain details about new emails, articles, news, etc to keep the users updates.

Most of the web browsers come with their own built-in message center functionality to display these web push notifications. On Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices, web browsers also use native system notification center to display the notifications to users.

Following image shows comparison of a notification displayed by Microsoft Edge using its embedded message center and Windows native Action Center:

As you can see in the above image, the embedded message center displays classic notifications which are faster and less animated. On the other hand, Windows Action Center displays modern UWP based notifications in form of toasts.

Sometimes you may want to force Microsoft Edge to use its built-in message center to display websites notifications if you are facing issues with Windows Action Center or if you disabled or blocked all notifications from Windows. Similarly, some users may want to force Microsoft Edge to always use Windows native notification center to display websites notifications as it’s more advanced and feature rich compared to Edge’s embedded message center.

Microsoft allows users to control this feature so that users can decide which notification method should Microsoft Edge use to show the websites notifications.

If you also want to enable or disable embedded message center or system notification center in Microsoft Edge, following steps will help you:

1. Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

3. To force Microsoft Edge to always use its embedded message center to display web push notifications in old classic format, select Disabled from the drop-down box.

To force Microsoft Edge to always use Windows native or system notification center to display web push notifications in form of modern toasts, select Enabled from the drop-down box.

4. Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

After restarting Edge, the web browser will always use your desired method to display websites notifications based on the selected preference value as mentioned above.

PS: If you decide to restore default settings for this feature in your browser, select “Default” option from the drop-down box for the above mentioned preference and restart the browser.

NOTE: Administrators can also utilize AllowSystemNotifications registry policy to implement the same behavior. Following article will help you in learning how to implement a policy in Microsoft Edge web browser:
