[Tip] Enable New HTTPS Connection Security Indicator Icon in Chrome Address bar

Newer versions of Google Chrome web browser (v93 and later) come with a brand new indicator icon for connection security displayed in the address bar. By default, the new icon is not displayed and Chrome still shows old icon the the address bar. Interested users can modify a hidden preference/flag to enable the new updated icon right now in Chrome.

Following image shows both old and new indicator icons displaying in Google Chrome address bar:

As you can see in above screenshot, by default Chrome displays a padlock icon in the address bar but you can replace it with a new drop-down arrow icon.

At the moment, Chrome is working on the new icon, that’s why it’s not enabled for all users. But in future versions, the new drop-down arrow icon will be enabled for all users.

This article will help you in replacing old connection indicator icon with the new one in Google Chrome address bar right now in existing versions.

When you visit a website in Chrome browser, Chrome displays a connection security icon near website URL in its address bar or omnibox. If a website is using secure HTTPS connection, Chrome browser displays a padlock icon as shown in following screenshot:

If you click on the padlock icon, Chrome displays following message:

Connection is secure

Your information (for example, passwords or credit card numbers) is private when it is sent to this site.

If you enable the new icon with the help of the method given in this article, Chrome starts showing a drop-down arrow icon in place of padlock icon as shown in following screenshot:

If you click on the drop-down arrow icon, Chrome displays following message:

Connection is secure

The site’s connection is secure unless Chrome tells you otherwise.

Following steps will help you in enabling the new drop-down arrow icon for connection security in Chrome address bar:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type indicator in the “Search flags” box.

You’ll get following option:

Omnibox Updated connection security indicators
Use new connection security indicators for https pages in the omnibox. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android

3. To activate and enable new redesigned icon in Chrome address bar, select Enabled from the drop-down box for above mentioned option.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. You have successfully activated and enabled new connection security icon in Chrome address bar.

Now try to open any webpage in Chrome and you’ll see the new icon in address bar.

PS: In future, if you decide to disable or remove new icon and restore old icon, select “Default” option from the drop-down box for above mentioned option and restart the browser.
