[Tip] Disable “F12” Key to Open Developer Tools in Microsoft Edge

If you keep pressing F12 key accidentally in Microsoft Edge web browser and it opens Developer Tools window and you want to disable it permanently, this tutorial will help you in turning off F12 key so that it stops launching Developer Tools sidebar in Microsoft Edge web browser.

Every web browser comes with Developer Tools functionality which helps web developers in building, testing websites and investigating issues with websites, etc.

Developer Tools can be launched in web browsers by pressing F12 key or Ctrl+Shift+I keys together.

Many times users accidentally press F12 key instead of F11 key when they want to switch to Full Screen mode. Actually every web browser comes with a built-in Full Screen mode which can be used by pressing F11 key.

Sometimes people press F12 key instead of F11 key and it launches Developer Tools sidebar in their web browser. It becomes very annoying if happens frequently.

To fix this annoyance, Microsoft has added a new option to Microsoft Edge (version 89 and later) settings which can be modified to turn on or off F12 keyboard shortcut to launch Developer Tools.

PS: Even if you disable F12 key to open Developer Tools, the other hotkey Ctrl+Shift+I will keep working to launch Developer Tools.

If you also want to disable F12 key to open Developer Tools in Microsoft Edge web browser, following steps will help you:

1. Open Microsoft Edge browser and click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar. Now select Settings option from the main menu.

Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page. You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

2. Now click on System tab in left sidebar and in right-side pane, you’ll see Open the DevTools when the F12 key is pressed option.

To disable F12 key to launch Developer Tools, set the toggle button to OFF.

That’s it. Now if you accidentally press F12 key in future, it’ll no longer open Developer Tools window in Microsoft Edge.

In future, if you decide to restore the shortcut key, set the above mentioned toggle button to ON.

    Just wish I had known this earlier. It is such a PITA. Very often I hit F12 instead of Backspace. I am not the most dexterous typist.
