[Tip] Disable or Remove Vertical Tabs Button from Toolbar in Microsoft Edge

Vertical Tabs is a new feature introduced in Microsoft Edge web browser which allows users to show opened or running tabs list in a vertical format in left side pane. When user turns on Vertical Tabs feature, Microsoft Edge moves the tab bar from top titlebar to left sidebar. That’s why the feature is also known as Side Tabs. The new Vertical Tab bar displays list of all running tabs using vertical alignment.

[Review / Tip] How to Enable or Disable Vertical Tabs in Microsoft Edge

Users can enable/disable Vertical Tabs layout by clicking on its button present at the extreme left of the tab bar or titlebar as shown in following screenshot:

Vertical Tabs feature might be very useful for people who work on lots of tabs simultaneously as the new Vertical Tabs feature can show multiple tabs with proper titles even if the user has opened many tabs. The default or old tab bar at top starts shrinking or reducing tabs width as soon as the user starts opening multiple tabs.

But there might be many people who are not going to use Vertical Tabs feature and for those people, the Vertical Tabs button or icon showing at the start of the tab bar might become unnecessary and waste of space.

Fortunately, Microsoft has provided ways to remove Vertical Tabs button from toolbar. You can also permanently disable Vertical Tabs feature in Microsoft Edge if you are not going to use it.

In this tutorial, we are going to tell you how to get rid of Vertical Tabs button or icon in Microsoft Edge toolbar as well as completely deactivate and disable Vertical Tabs functionality in Microsoft Edge.

If you also don’t want to use Vertical Tabs feature and want to remove its toolbar button as well as the whole Vertical Tabs functionality in Microsoft Edge browser, following methods will help you:

How to Remove Vertical Tabs Button from Microsoft Edge Toolbar:

It’s actually quite simple. Right-click on Vertical Tabs button in toolbar and select “Hide from toolbar” option from context menu. It’ll immediately hide Vertical Tabs button in the toolbar.

Alternatively, you can remove Vertical Tabs button using Microsoft Edge Settings page as described in following steps:

1. Open Microsoft Edge browser and click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar. Now select Settings option from the main menu.

Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page. You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

2. Now click on Appearance tab in left sidebar and in right-side pane, you’ll see Customize toolbar section.

To remove Vertical Tabs button from Microsoft Edge toolbar, disable or set the Show vertical tabs button option to OFF.

It’ll immediately delete Vertical Tabs button from Microsoft Edge toolbar.

PS: In future, if you want to restore Vertical Tabs button in Microsoft Edge toolbar, enable the Show vertical tabs button option again.

Permanently Disable Vertical Tabs Feature in Microsoft Edge:

Microsoft Edge browser comes with a hidden preference/flag to activate or deactivate Vertical Tabs functionality in the browser. If you decided to not use Vertical Tabs feature and want to completely disable it, you can use following steps to completely disable Vertical Tabs feature in Microsoft Edge:

1. Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration or experiments page.

2. Now type vertical in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Allows users to move tabs to a vertical list on the side to more easily scan, identify, switch between and manage tabs when there are many open. – Mac, Windows, Linux

3. To disable Vertical Tabs feature, set the Vertical Tabs option to Disabled using the drop-down box.

4. Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

That’s it. You have successfully disabled Vertical Tabs feature in Microsoft Edge web browser. The feature will be completely removed from the browser. You’ll no longer see Vertical Tabs toolbar button and Vertical Tabs option in Microsoft Edge Settings page.

PS: In future, if you decide to re-enable Vertical Tabs feature, set the Vertical Tabs option to Enabled using the drop-down box.

  1. Did you know, Microsoft Edge v89 comes with custom accent colour that change home page and tab colours, just go to edge://flags and enable the following flag

    Enable picker for color based themes
    #edge-color-theme-picker

    After enable go to settings > appearance to choose custom themes, red colour is ideal for me.
