[Tip] Customize Vivaldi Look-n-Feel Using Themes Feature

Vivaldi web browser version 6.0 and later come with new themes or skins feature which allows users to change and customize the web browser’s appearance and look-n-feel using custom colors, background wallpaper, new icons set and various eye candy effects such as transparency and blur. In this article, we’ll learn how to apply and use new themes feature in Vivaldi browser and how to create customized themes to personalize Vivaldi browser.

How to Apply and Use a Theme in Vivaldi Web Browser

To change the default theme in Vivaldi browser, you’ll need to open Vivaldi Settings page and follow the below steps:

1. Open Vivaldi browser and click on Tools option present in the Menu bar. Now select Settings option from the list. It’ll open Vivaldi Settings window.

Alternatively, you can direct open Vivaldi Settings window by pressing Ctrl+F12 keys together.

2. Now go to Themes section or tab present in the left-side pane in Settings window.

You’ll see lots of built-in themes present under Themes section which come preinstalled or bundled with Vivaldi browser. You can click on any desired theme and it’ll immediately apply the selected theme in the browser.

Create Custom Theme in Vivaldi Web Browser

You can also create your own theme in Vivaldi browser to customize its look-n-feel. Under Themes section in Vivaldi Settings window, click on Editor tab or “New Theme” option and you can create a custom theme.

1. First you can select a parent theme from the drop-down box to use the theme preset as the base for your new theme.

2. Now change the background, foreground, highlight and accent color using the given boxes.

3. Using the Background tab, you can select a wallpaper image to set it as the background. You can also set any desired image stored on your hard disk drive as background by clicking on the “Select Image” button. If you don’t want to set a background image, you can change the option “Image” to “Color” by clicking on the “Type” drop-down box.

4. Now go to Settings tab and you’ll be able to turn on/off transparency and blur effects. You can set the transparency and blur level and select whether the tab bar and background tabs should be displayed as transparent. You can also turn on/off rounded corners feature.

5. The last tab “Icons” allow you to customize the icons which are shown in different places of Vivaldi web browser such as toolbar, address bar, etc.

At last, you can click on “Enable” button to apply the custom theme. The new theme will be stored in the built-in themes section to use it any time.

You can also take a backup of the custom theme by clicking on “Export Theme” button to import the theme in future when you reinstall the web browser.

Download Themes from Official Vivaldi Themes Store

You can also download and install ready-made themes from official Vivaldi Themes Store page. Click on “Get more themes” link present on the Themes section or open themes.vivaldi.net page in Vivaldi browser.

Now you can browse through several customized themes for Vivaldi browser and download them in your web browser.

All downloaded themes will be displayed along with the built-in themes under Themes section.

How to Delete a Theme in Vivaldi Web Browser

The default themes which come preinstalled with Vivaldi web browser, can’t be deleted. But all custom themes created by the user can be removed.

On Themes section, hover the mouse cursor over a custom theme and you’ll see a (-) icon appeared over the theme icon. You can click on the (-) icon and it’ll delete the custom theme from your web browser.

Restoring Default Theme in Vivaldi Web Browser

If you don’t like the new theme and want to restore the default UI and look-n-feel in Vivaldi web browser, you can click on “Vivaldi” theme icon present at the first place on Themes section.

It’ll reset and apply the default theme including colors, background image, icons, etc in your web browser.

Change Vivaldi Private Browsing (Incognito) Window Theme and Color

The new themes feature also allows Vivaldi users to change the default Dark interface of private browsing or Incognito window. By default, when you open a new private window using File -> New private window option or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N hotkey, Vivaldi opens the private browsing window using the dark theme.

Using the Themes section, you can apply any desired theme to private windows as well. Just go to Themes section in Vivaldi Settings, scroll down and you’ll see “Private Window Theme” section.

Now you can select any theme for the private browsing window using the drop-down box. You can set a light theme for the private browsing window if you don’t like the default dark theme.

That’s a special bonus feature for Vivaldi browser users.

Set Schedule to Change Themes Automatically in Vivaldi Web Browser

Similar to smartphones, you can set a time schedule to automatically change the Vivaldi browser theme at fixed time interval. The “Theme Schedule” section allows you to create schedule for changing themes.

You can select which theme should be applied when the default Windows theme is set to Dark or Light. You can also set day or night time to automatically apply light and dark themes in Vivaldi browser to reduce eye strain.
