[Privacy Issue] Microsoft Edge might Submit Your Visited Webpage URLs to Bing

Recently a Reddit user “hackermchackface” shared a big privacy issue discovered in Microsoft Edge web browser. According to his investigation, Microsoft Edge 112.0.1722.34 and later versions automatically send the URL of all webpages visited by the user to Bing API website (bingapis.com).

In previous versions of Edge browser, only the URLs of popular social media sites such as YouTube were submitted to Bing. It was a part of “Follow Creators” feature introduced in Edge browser which used to show content creators suggestions to the user to follow.

But in version 112.0.1722.34 and later, all website URLs are being sent to Bing. It might be a bug in newer versions of Edge which needs to be fixed immediately.

[Solution] Turn Off Follow Creators Feature in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft should fix the issue in future versions of Edge browser but in the meantime, you can manually deactivate and disable “Follow Creators” feature in Edge to completely restrict and prevent the browser from sending your visited webpages URLs to Bing.

Following steps will help you in disabling the privacy risk feature in Edge:

1. Open Microsoft Edge browser and click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar. Now select Settings option from the main menu.

Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page.

You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

3. Disable the first option by setting the toggle button given next to the option to OFF. The second option will be automatically disabled or grayed out.

Restart the browser and it’ll disable the follow creators feature in Edge and will also disable the privacy issue.

  1. This option is weird for me too, because content creators might be hackers, I read some cases that some content creators, whose intentions are not good, first launch a tool like app, software or command file (come with clean code) and people will trust the tool (after popularity), then the creator silently modify the code of content to hack the think. Sometimes it is difficult to catch the problem.
This option is the open invitation for hackers.
