[Tip] Check Websites Compatibility with Chrome 100 and Microsoft Edge 100 Versions

This article will help you in checking whether your favorite website will open and work fine in version 100 of Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers.

Very soon the version 100 of both web browsers Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge will release and it might be possible that some websites might not work or break in version 100 and later.

There might be several reasons behind this assumption:

  • In version 100 and later of these browsers, a 3-digit number will be used in the User agent string of these web browsers such as Chrome/100 and Edg/100. This user agent string is checked by websites upon a user visit to check the browser compatibility. It might be possible that the software behind some websites might not support a 3-digit number in the browser user agent which may cause the site appearing broken in these web browsers.
  • Some websites use firewall and other security mechanism for protection and these security features might fail to recognize 3-digit number in user agent string of browsers and may block the user’s visit for security reasons.

There might be several other similar reasons related to the new user agent string which might cause some websites not working properly in version 100 and later of Chrome and Edge.

The good news is that both browsers provide a way to check whether a website will work fine or not in their 3-digit versions. Both Chrome and Edge teams have implemented a built-in way for webmasters and normal users to check websites compatibility.

Using these methods, you can force Chrome and Edge versions to 100 and check whether your own website or favorite websites will work fine in Chrome 100 and Microsoft Edge 100 versions.

You just need to modify a secret preference/flag to check the compatibility of websites. Since both web browsers are based on Chromium project, both come with similar preference/flag to check the websites compatibility.

If you also want to check some websites using version 100 of Chrome and Edge, following steps will help you:

Check Websites Compatibility with Google Chrome 100 and Later Versions

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type 100 in the “Search flags” box.

You’ll get following options:

Force major version to 100 in User-Agent

Force the Chrome major version in the User-Agent string to 100, which allows testing the 3-digit major version number before the actual M100 release. This flag is only available from M96-M99. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, Fuchsia

#force-major-version-to-100

Force the minor version to 100 in the User-Agent string

Force the Chrome minor version in the User-Agent string to 100, which allows testing a 3-digit minor version number. Currently, the minor version is always reported as 0, but due to potential breakage with the upcoming major version 100, this flag allows us to test whether setting the major version in the minor version part of the User-Agent string would be an acceptable alternative. If force-major-version-to-100 is set, then this flag has no effect. See crbug.com/1278459 for details. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, Fuchsia

PS: After checking the compatibility, if you decide to restore Chrome default version, set the above mentioned preferences to Default and restart the browser.

Check Websites Compatibility with Microsoft Edge 100 and Later Versions

1. Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

#force-major-version-to-100

Force the minor version to 100 in the User-Agent string

Currently, the minor version is always reported as 0, but due to potential breakage with the upcoming major version 100, this flag allows us to test whether setting the major version in the minor version part of the User-Agent string would be an acceptable alternative. If force-major-version-to-100 is set, then this flag has no effect. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Android
