Problem Symptom: Mouse Wheel Scrolling Stopped Working in Firefox

Yesterday Mozilla team released Firefox 110 version and today in the morning when I checked my Inbox, I was surprised to see more than 30 emails from readers regarding this annoying issue in Firefox.

After updating to Firefox 110, suddenly mouse wheel scrolling stopped working on webpages for many Firefox users. They can scroll using arrow and page up/down keys present on their keyboard but the mouse wheel is not working while trying to scroll.

Problem Reason: X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) Compatibility Issue with Firefox

The reason behind this issue is popular X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) tool which is considered as an alternative to Microsoft’s IntelliMouse and used by many users to customize and configure mouse functionality.

Yesterday we shared this information in our Firefox Version Update article that the latest 110 version contains a known issue with X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) software.

A bug in the popular X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) tool may cause mouse wheel scrolling to stop working. The author(s) are working on an update. Meanwhile, scrolling can be restored by reconfiguring XMBC: either disable the Make scroll wheel scroll window under cursor option in the global settings, or enable the Disable scroll window under cursor option if using a custom profile for Firefox.

The issue started appearing because of the new GPU sandboxing feature enabled in Firefox 110 version on Windows devices.

Problem Solution: Disable Scroll Window Under Cursor Option

Mozilla team has officially shared a working solution to fix mouse wheel scrolling in Firefox 110 and later versions.

If you are using X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) tool in your Windows PC and facing mouse wheel scrolling issue in Firefox, following steps will help you in resolving the issue:

1. Right-click on the X-Mouse Button Control icon present in Taskbar notification area (system tray) and select “Setup” option from the context menu.

2. It’ll open X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) Settings window. Now go to “Options” tab.

3. Enable “Disable Scroll Window Under Cursor” option.

4. Click on “Apply” button and exit the window.

PS: You can also try to disable “Make scroll wheel scroll window under cursor” option present on X-Mouse Button Control main window -> Global Settings -> General tab as mentioned by Mozilla team.

It’ll immediately fix the mouse wheel scrolling issue and you’ll be able to scroll pages in Firefox using your mouse wheel without any issue.

According to Mozilla team, the developer of X-Mouse Button Control tool are working on a solution to fix the wheel scrolling issue. There is no information when the fix will be released by X-Mouse Button Control team.

A testing version of X-Mouse Button Control 2.20 is available for users which comes with a working fix for the mouse wheel scrolling issue. Interested users can download it from here.

There is a dedicated page available at official X-Mouse Button Control forums regarding this wheel scrolling issue. You can read more about it there.

Another Working Solution for Advanced Users

Advanced users can also try to disable new GPU sandboxing feature in Firefox by modifying a few preferences present on about:config page to fix the mouse wheel scrolling issue.

1. Open Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter.

2. Now change following preferences or flags:

gfx.webrender.software = False

gfx.webrender.compositor = False

layers.acceleration.disabled = True

security.sandbox.gpu.level = 0

You can try to play with the above mentioned preferences values. For some users, setting the above mentioned preferences to True might work and for some, setting the preferences to False might work.

  1. Hi,

    i`m using this mouse driver a longer time now and it works always fine, but now, the scrolling speed with the keys 4 & 5 at my Logitech MX Master (one) is very slow, scrolling with the wheel has the right speed i have set (3 rows). Is it a new feature or will this be fixed in one of the next versions? Running Microsoft Windows 10 22H2 and all updates on an older Z170A/INTEL 6700K and 64GB 3200 Ram.

    Thank you for a very good peace of Software.

  2. Thanks so much, I had no idea the team behind firefox was so attentive to issues like this! Fixed instantly!

  3. I don’t use X-Mouse and I had the problem too. I solved it by installing X-Mouse and following the procedure.

  4. This fix worked for the scroll, but it doesn’t fix the remapped buttons.

    — I have mouse buttons 5 & 6 mapped to Home and End (respectively), and these no longer work either with the Firefox Update.

  5. Thanks a lot! Good thing I did not try to reinstall Firefox before going here 🙂

  6. Anybody knows why on chat gpt page is not possible to scroll to the top of the page. When I try to go to top by mouse or keyboard the page stay on the bottom side no matter what I do. All other tabs are ok, but chat gpt has this problem.

  7. Today i upgraded my notebook to windows 10 and this problem with scrolling appeared. This solution works and my mouse rolls again. Thanks a lot.

  8. funny though, I was afraid that turning off that option that I’d have to give focus to any window before using the scrolling wheel. But it seems that that option isn’t required, as windows is doing it anyway.

    I also have midi gear with knobs that I use to send scrolling events and they are still working. I use ff portable so I can restore everything in a snap. I just hate being forced to update. It was because my bank wouldn’t let me use an older ff.

  9. Just discovered today after starting up FF the scrolling function had ceased to work, I had installed the other day YAST mouse scroll extension, disabled it and now it works again.
