[Guide] How to Reinstall All Default Built-in Apps in Windows 10

In previous tutorials, we told you how to uninstall and remove all or some of built-in modern apps in Windows 10:

[Tip] How to Uninstall Modern Apps in Windows 10

[Guide] How to Remove All Built-in Apps in Windows 10

If you removed some or all built-in apps in Windows 10 and now you want to restore them in your computer, this tutorial will help you.

Today in this tutorial, we'll tell you how to reinstall built-in apps in Windows 10 using PowerShell program:

We have divided this tutorial in 2 parts:

  • PART 1: Reinstall a specific built-in app in Windows 10
  • PART 2: Reinstall all built-in apps in Windows 10

Now lets start the tutorial:

As usual we'll need to open PowerShell as Administrator to execute the required commands.

Open Start Menu and type powershell. It'll automatically start searching for the program and will show PowerShell in search results. Now press Ctrl+Shift+Enter keys together to launch PowerShell as Administrator. Alternatively, you can right-click on PowerShell and select "Run as Administrator" option.

PS: If you have replaced Command Prompt with PowerShell in WIN+X menu, you can directly launch it from there. [See this]

Now you'll need to execute commands in PowerShell as mentioned in following steps:

PART 1: Reinstall a Specific Built-in App in Windows 10

If you want to reinstall any specific app, you can use following command to restore that particular app:

Add-AppxPackage -register appxmanifest.xml_file_path -DisableDevelopmentMode

As you can see, the above mentioned command requires an essential parameter which is the full path of appxmanifest.xml file. Actually all modern apps contain this XML file in their program files folder and this XML file is required to restore the app.

All modern apps are stored in following folder:

C:\Program Files\WindowsApps

This folder is hidden as well as restricted. Check this guide to learn more about this folder. This folder contains several sub-folders (with the same name as the app's PackageFullName info) which contain required files of all modern apps. You'll find one appxmanifest.XML file in all those folders.

1. So to restore an app, you'll need to know the PackageFullName information of that app which can be found using following command:

Get-AppxPackage -allusers | Select Name, PackageFullName

Now select the PackageFullName information of your desired app and press Enter key to copy it to clipboard.

2. Now execute following command to restore that app:

Add-AppxPackage -register "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\PackageFullName\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode

Replace PackageFullName term in above command with the copied PackageFullName information from step 1. Just press CTRL+V keys together to paste copied PackageFullName information.

That's it. It'll reinstall the app. If you receive any error message, ignore it. You may need to restart the computer.

PART 2: Reinstall All Built-in Apps in Windows 10

If you want, you can reinstall all built-in modern apps in a single step using following command:

Get-AppxPackage -allusers | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -register "$($_.InstallLocation)\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode}

This command will take a few moments and will reinstall all built-in apps. If you receive any error message, ignore it. You may need to restart the computer to take effect.

If you face any problem in restoring apps in Windows 10, you can also try the Reset this PC feature of Windows 10 to restore Windows 10 to factory settings which will perform a clean installation of Windows 10 and will restore all bundled modern apps.

Check out following tutorial to learn how to use Reset this PC feature in Windows 10:

  • Thank you so much. You are a life saver.

  • Hi VG. I have a Windows 10 tablet upgraded from Windows 8.1, everything works fine on it except for Microsoft Solitaire Collection. It was working finely right after upgrade but then one day it updated itself from the Store and now nothing happens when I click it (and it doesn't allow me to pin it in the Start Screen). I tried to re-install it using Settings app, then using this manual, and to no avail. Maybe some other suggestions?

  • Do you think I have the problem of reinstalling microsoft photo app, because i restored the “old Windows Photo Viewer”

  • VG

^^ Try to take ownership of C:\Program Files\WindowsApps folder as mentioned in following tutorial:

You can try to uninstall and then reinstall using above mentioned command via PowerShell.

  • After taking the ownership I got the Same result, I am not able to reinstall Microsoft.Windows.Photos.
I tried also to download the app from the windows store and i got a error code: 0x80070005.

I used also : Get-AppxPackage -allusers | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -register "$($_.InstallLocation)\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode} .. and all the apps were reinstalled but not the Windows Photo that i deleted
    I run also:

    Sfc /scannow

    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    • Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    • Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /startComponentCleanup

    everything is ok..

Is there any way to install the app manually from the folder or the cd?

Anyways not worries because i am using the old photo viewer. I just want to find the way to reinstall what i deleted.

  • Tried this already, still nothing helps...

  • A God send. Thanks for these tips. :)

  • Excuse me if I'm going a bit off-topic here.
Do you have any plans to publish a guide for speeding up Windows 10 as per your tradition of making a similar guide every time a new version of Windows is released?

  • VG

^^ 100%. Actually I'm already working on that guide. I'm investigating Windows 10 settings and Registry to find everything which can be customized to improve Windows 10 performance. I'll post the tutorial very soon this month.

  • thanks guys it was very helpful and i love this website keep up the good work

  • VG

^^ It seems the folder was permanently removed from your Windows 10. It might be possible that you used the command to remove the app for all users. You can download it from Store.

  • Hi VG,

I had to reinstall Alarms in order to fix an issue, but my system is in Spanish. The app was reinstalled in English. Do you know how can I fix this?

  • VG

^^ Try to first change system language to English and then change it to Spanish again using Region settings (intl.cpl).

  • VG

^^ Did you open Power Shell as Administrator?

  • Okay So I tried the below methods: (SPOILER ALERT) None of them worked!

-Running wsreset.exe on elevated Command Prompt
-Clear caches from the Users Local App data
-Checking the Permissions on the Package Folder in the Registry - Was already set to SYSTEM
-Uninstalling and Re-installing all packages Through Power Shell

But wait there is hope. Unfortunately it will take about 30-90 minutes to fix.

What you need? Windows 10 ISO (unpacked) on a USB Stick and most important SOME PATIENCE! :)

Step 1: Delete All Packages Files

-Login to the local user with Admin rights.
    -Go to C:\Program Files
-Right Click on the "WindowsApps" folder And set the ownership of the folder and all the sub-folders to the local user
-Go into the "WindowsApps" Folder. (Path: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps). Now delete all the folders in this location

    Step 2: Reinstall Windows 10

-Insert the USB stick with Windows 10 Install on it and Click on Setup
    -Download All updates
-When Prompted select the "Keep Personal Files and App" check box. Failing to do so will result in you loosing all your files and installed Apps (Softwares) you don't want that
-Continue with the install. Ideally it takes around 30-40 minutes to fully re-install windows 10. It is way better than spending day's looking for a solutions. It does not exist.

Once Windows 10 is re-installed OR some of you might wanna call it an "In-Place Upgrade" is finished You should have all your Files and Apps already installed and you should be ready to go. Oh, and yes the Built-in Apps will be working again.

Hope this works for you too.

    Good luck!

  • Very much thank you SP! This is what finally helped for me, delete WindowsApps folder and then "In-Place upgrade". It's now amazing to see actually Windows Store opening.

On my computer it was 'ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES' missing rights to WindowsApps folder (need use Process Monitor to track which folders/files are the trouble for each App) but additionally also missing some older version application folders there - and couldn't find those folders on any other computer either - and Windows just refuses to register apps when older version application folders are missing. Wasted a LOT of time with this.

  • I get the message below which kind of indicates that there's something awry with the whole apps installation, but they do all look to be there in the Windows Apps folder. Of course I could re-download them from the store except Store is one of the apps which isn't working! Any ideas????

    Tks in advance

^^ Please post the exact command which you are trying to execute.

  • Hi VG Tks for the reply. You're right to go back to the beginning on this. I've been going round the loop on this so many times I may have inadvertently posted the wrong error message for this command.

To be absolutely sure here are both the command and error message together:

    Get-AppxPackage -allusers | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -register "$($_.InstallLocation)\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode}

    Get-AppxPackage : %1 is not a valid Win32 application.

  • VG

^^ Please check the 3 folders mentioned in following article:

And make sure all 3 folders exist in your computer.

  • C:\Program Files\WindowsApps - Exists and all of the metro apps I can think of seem to be listed there.

    C:\Windows\SystemApps - Exists - 2,141 Files, 276 Folders, 135MB

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages - Exists - 9,590 Files, 1,636 Folders, 450MB

  • VG

^^ Thats strange. Did you launch Powershell as Administrator?

  • I did.

  • VG

^^ It might be possible that some 3rd party tweaking tool changed some settings or files in your computer which are preventing the restore command. I can only suggest you to use Reset PC feature.

  • So have you given up??

  • Sorry - didn't get last message. Unfortunately reset failed as well. I've just reinstalled windows over the top of existing system and that's fixed the probelm. Tks for trying.

  • VG

^^ Yeah. Reinstalling Windows over existing Windows will work as it restores all system files and required settings. Glad to know your problem solved. :)

  • Hi,

First I thought could fix the store app which is not working so i tried reinstall using the command i found in web via powershell, now it deleted the calculator and alarm, i dont know how to reinstall this app anymore since store app is not working, i tried your command but it didnt work, do you have any idea i can reinstall the alarm and calculator. Thanks

  • Hi,
I am getting below mentioned error when trying to install apps. I don't see any app being installed. The below is just a sample. There were many messages like these.

Add-AppxPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073CF6, Package could not be registered.

  • VG

^^ It seems some mismatch or duplication of app files. Did you try any software to remove metro apps, etc? The best way to restore these apps for you would be Reset PC feature.

  • Hey! I have had sooooo many windows problems that i am trying to fix after the last update a few days ago.

Amongst these issues, the Photos and Store apps won't work. Nothing happens when i click them, and also Photos does not appear as an option when i try to "Open in..." JPGs... "TWINUI" was the default setting, but i have changed it to Windows Photo Viewer.

First i tried (through another guide) to reinstall all windows builtin apps. That did no good, and only messed up more apps ... So i restored the system to yesterday...

Then i found your guide to reinstall 1 and 1. However, the same thing happens now as when i tried to reinstall all (except now only for Photos, not all apps). I have followed your guide and in Powershell it seemed successfull, and i restarted the laptop. But i still can't find any Photos app. I only find a program that calls itself "@ {Microsoft.Windows.Photos_15.1208.1048"

    Which i ofc can't open...
Same thing happened when i tried to replace all windows apps... All the apps ended up with weird names, and not able to open...

Any tips? Would be appreciated! Would be nice to get Photos, and/or Store up and running again, cause the Windows PhotoViewer looks sooooo old ... :P

  • Thank you so much for this. I needed this to reinstall Windows Calculator. I've been so surprised how much I've needed powershell with dealing with fixing Windows 10 bugs. Is this really Microsoft going down a more user friendly route? I seem be on the terminal all the time!

  • man this didnt work for me!
i tried to recover all built in apps as you explained and then restarted my pc but not much happened.
    thanks though!

  • How do I undo this?

    I have tried this:

    Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

But no luck. App icons are still gone.

  • If all the methods above are not working...you can try the simplest thing to resolve this issue.

Step1: You just have to create another signin(User Account) account with administrator privilege.

Step2: After the desktop is prepared and all the built in(System apps) are shown on start menu, go to C:\Program Files\Windows Apps (Please make sure that you can see the hidden files and folder because the folder "Windows Apps" is hidden) and copy the folder into your other drive such as D drive or any external drive.

Step3: Now copy and replace the "Windows Apps" folder with the new one.

Step4: Restart your PC. And Enjoy...!!
