Recently I released a boot screen for Windows XP which looks similar to Windows 7 boot screen:

A few people requested for a similar boot screen for Windows Vista and I'm glad to announce that its available now.

I have created another boot screen for Windows Vista users which looks very close to Windows 7 boot screen:

There are some limitations with Windows Vista boot screen and we can't have a moving progressbar in the boot screen. So the glow inside the progressbar will not move.

You can download the boot screen from following link:

Extract the ZIP file and you'll get following 2 files:

  • winload.exe.mui
  • VistaVG Seven Boot Screen for Vista.tbs

You can use any of the 2 files to enjoy the new boot screen.

1. If you want to use "winload.exe.mui" file, then you'll need to replace existing "winload.exe.mui" file present in "%windir%\System32\en-US" folder with this new one.

First take permission of "winload.exe.mui" file present in "%windir%\System32\en-US" folder using following tutorial:

Add Take Ownership Option in File / Folder Context Menu in Windows Vista

Now rename the file to "winload_backup.exe.mui" or any other name and copy the new "winload.exe.mui" file in this folder.

Now type "msconfig" in RUN or start menu search box and press Enter. Go to "Boot" tab and select "Microsoft Windows Vista" entry. Now enable "No GUI Boot" option and apply it. Restart your system to take affect and enjoy the new boot screen.

2. If you want to use second file "VistaVG Seven Boot Screen for Vista.tbs", then you'll need Tuneup Utilities to apply it which is very safe and easy to use.

    Good work !

  • Nice! now I can make my xp look windows 7  good work!

  • It will not look good without the animation. Hope we get to see the animated version soon.

  • Thanks for the download.

But I can't make this works.

I replaced the winload.exe.mui and restarted but the boot screen is still the old one.

    Nothing changed.

    Can you help me.

    Thanks in advanced.

  • Thanks a Looooooooooooooooooooooooot!!

  • Hey,

I would like an animated version, however this does not seem possible as only one format (I think it's BMP) is allowed, and at very low specs. No videos are allowed. Setting the "No GUI Boot" flag tells it to stop using the default progress bar (which is locked and hidden) and to load the winload.exe.mui file which contains data for the image. There is a tool for making these MUI files, and I believe Vishal used that.

  • Installed, and quickly removed after first boot up.

Without animation it makes the Screen look either cheap n nasty or like the PC has frozen.

Either way it looks crap, it definitely needs the animation and it would like a 1000x better

  • Even though that was rude, I couldn't help but laugh. (cheap n nasty, crap, lol)

  • Too bad it's not animated. :(
