Recently an AskVG reader contacted us and asked us how to restore the default theme in Google Chrome after installing a 3rd party theme? He installed a theme from Chrome Web Store and later he decided to uninstall the theme and revert back to default theme. But he was unable to find a way to do this. He couldn’t find any option to switch back to default theme in Chrome.

If you are also facing this problem and want to restore default theme in Google Chrome after adding a 3rd party theme to Chrome, this tutorial will help you.

Restoring default theme in Chrome is very simple. You can do this using Chrome settings page as mentioned below:

1. Open Google Chrome, click on the 3-dots icon (main menu) present at the top-right corner of the window.

2. Now select “Settings” option from the main menu.

3. It’ll open Chrome settings page. Now look under “Appearance” section, you’ll find “Themes” option.

Google Chrome will show the currently installed and active theme name under “Themes” option.

You’ll get a button “Reset to default” present next to Themes option.

  1. This is so obvious, it’s a shame you must resort to such simplicity in order to keep up with the needs of the just plain folks.

  2. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I was just going mad in finding the option to restore default look. Google should add a more visible option in Settings page or they should add a new Themes page similar to Extensions page where we can switch between themes.

  3. Hi there, I have tried almost everything to get rid of a theme, I reset Chrome settings to default and I still have the theme I want to get rid of. I tried to download another theme.. It doesn’t work, I restart the browser and the old theme repears!.. It’s a nightmare, because I don’t like the theme at all.

So I am reaching out, can you please guide me to get rid of it?
Thanks a lot, please send it to my mail so that I get your answer..

    Bye guys and thank again

  4. ^^ It seems some files or settings are corrupted in your system. If nothing is working, then I’ll advise you to uninstall then reinstall the browser.

  5. Your instructions are inaccurate in April 2020. There is no default theme button under appearances – instead clicking appearances takes you directly to the Chrome store.

  6. ^^ The instructions are absolutely correct. The “Reset to default” button only appears when you have applied a custom theme.

Double checked in Chrome latest version before replying.

  7. I know 100% I had a custom theme for many many years. April 2020 Windows 10 update. Theme disappeared. As John above says, the only item that references ‘theme’ directs user to Chrome store. Since the “Reset to default” option is not available, I can only conclude that the update wiped out the existence of my default theme. And yes, I did have everything synced so it should not have been wiped out. If anyone has other ideas, I would love to get my theme back. ty
