[Important] Beware of Unofficial COWIN Apps on Google Play Store

UPDATE: There is no official Co-Win app released by Indian government for mobile phones. You need to register on CoWin portal website for free vaccination or use Aarogya Setu app for vaccine registration.

SUMMARY: Recently Indian government announced about official Co-Win app for mobile phones which will be used to register for free vaccination for Covid-19 and to track record of vaccination program. At the moment, Co-Win app has not been launched by Indian government but there are a few unofficial/fake apps already available on Google Play Store with the same name Cowin. You are advised to not download or install those apps in your smartphone and wait for the official Co-Win app launch which is going to release on January 16, 2021.

Everyone is aware of the Covid-19 or Coronavirus pandemic and the whole world is suffering from it. Now thanks to the medical staff and researchers, lots of vaccines have been developed or are under development which will prevent us from Covid-19 infection.

In India, there are many Corona vaccines are under processing and 2 Corona vaccines Covishield (from Serum Institute, Oxford University, AstraZeneca) and Covaxin (from Bharat Biotech) have been approved for emergency vaccination by Indian government.

Indian PM has announced that first of all the vaccine will be given to health workers, then front-line workers and at last the vaccine will be given to senior citizens (50 years+). There will be approx. 30 crores people falling under this categorization which will get Corona vaccination first.

After completing vaccination of these 30 crore people, other remaining people will be considered for vaccination. Will all get free vaccination or will they need to pay for it, only time will decide.

For easy and quick completion of vaccination program, Indian PM announced about official app called “Co-Win” which will be released for smartphones (Google Android as well as Apple iPhone).

Co-Win app will help people in understanding the vaccination program and register for the vaccination. People who get the vaccine, will be able to track record of next vaccination dose with the help of Co-Win app.

Co-Win app has NOT been launched yet but there are already multiple apps available on Play Store with the same name. If you try to search for cowin on Play Store, you’ll get several apps with same name in search results as shown in following screenshot:

Beware these apps are not official Co-Win app. Either these apps are unofficial or fake ones.

As far as I know, official app will be named as CO-WIN and will be launched on January 16, 2021 by Indian prime minister Narendra Modi.

The official Co-Win app should be be launched from NIC eGov Mobile Apps developer account on Play Store which is official account of Indian government. All other government apps such as mParivahan, Aarogya Setu, etc have been released and launched via the same official account on Play Store.

So make sure to check the developer name before downloading the app after January 16.

I’ll share the official direct download link of Co-Win app here on this page as soon as it becomes available on Play Store for your convenience.

Again beware of existing unofficial Cowin apps on Play Store which are not related to Covid-19 or Corona vaccination at all.
