[IDM Users] Think Twice Before Clicking on OK Button After Quick Update

IDM (Internet Download Manager) is a very popular and widely used file download software for Windows operating system. I’m using IDM since many years in my computer machines.

No doubt, IDM is one of the best file download manager program for web browsers. It improves download speed and downloads files from Internet faster compared to the built-in download manager feature present in web browsers.

IDM can integrate with all popular web browsers (such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and the new Microsoft Edge web browser) without any issue. It comes bundled with separate extensions for all web browsers and when it detects a 3rd party web browser installed in user’s device, it automatically adds its extension to the web browser so that user can download files from websites via IDM.

Why I’m telling all of this? Because in this article, I’m going to address a BIG annoyance present in IDM software. Apart from clean and minimal UI, several useful features and excellent download functionality, there is a HUGE mistake in IDM code or user interface which is totally unacceptable.

I’m talking about Quick Update feature present in IDM which automatically detects new version available for IDM and notifies user about it. User can download and install the new version to upgrade his IDM program to latest version.

That’s good. No problem. But as soon as the quick update finishes and the user clicks on Finish button present in quick update wizard, IDM shows another dialog box to confirm reboot. IDM needs to restart user’s computer to replace its program files which are currently in use by Windows.

Following is the exact message displayed by IDM:

The IDM installation program must reboot your computer to replace files that were in use. Press OK to reboot your computer now.

[OK] [Cancel]

As soon as the user clicks on OK button, the computer immediately starts shutting down to restart Windows. BOOM!!!

That’s the BIGGEST annoyance present in IDM. Many times the user can mistakenly click on OK button in hurry to just exit from the message box and it’ll restart the computer without his knowledge. He might be working on some important work which will be lost once his computer restarts.

No one will think that a file download manager software will require to restart the computer and many people might click on OK button in hurry to just finish the update installation process.

IDM should re-label the buttons to clarify the message. In my opinion, the buttons should be labeled as “Restart Now” and “Don’t Restart“. So that the user can clearly understand the message displayed by IDM and doesn’t click on OK button by mistake.

OK button is generally used to close the message box. Showing OK button to direct restart user’s computer is not a good decision by IDM. Not user friendly at all.

I hope IDM will listen to this request and will rename the buttons in future IDM versions.

  1. Agreed with this. It needs to put a Don’t restart button. But i never encountered quick update yet.

  2. I think this post was born of frustration due to reader laziness, the message in the box is quite clear.

    > Press OK to reboot your computer now. <- 100% clear that you press OK it will reboot NOW

I agree that the call to action buttons can be made more UX friendly by labeling them Reboot NOW instead of OK and Reboot Later instead of Cancel. The latter if thats what is actually happening.
