[Fix] “Updates are Underway. Wait a Few Minutes, Then Refresh the Page” Error in Microsoft Edge

Today when I tried to update Microsoft Edge web browser in one of my Windows 10 devices, I got following error message:

Updates are underway. Wait a few minutes, then refresh the page.

Actually today Microsoft released a new version of its Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser. I successfully upgraded all Microsoft Edge browsers installed in my few computer machines but one machine displayed above mentioned error message while trying to update.

I opened the “About Microsoft Edge” page multiple times using 3-dots Menu -> Help and Feedback as well as main Settings page but every time the browser started checking for updates and after a few seconds, returned the “Updates are underway. Wait a few minutes, then refresh the page.” error message with an exclamation mark as shown in following screenshot:

There was no error code or help link provided to investigate the issue. I tried to refresh the page several times as well but same problem persisted.

After a few minuted troubleshooting, I was able to successfully update Microsoft Edge browser in the device.

The solution was very simple and I’m going to share the fix in this article so that if you also face this problem in future, this easy solution will assist you in getting rid of this annoying message.

Here is the solution:

Actually the issue was occurring due to Microsoft Edge Update executable was not properly connecting to Internet. I just terminated Microsoft Edge Update service using Task Manager, closed the browser and then relaunched it.

Here are the detailed steps for you:

Launch Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys together. Alternatively, you can open it by right-clicking on Taskbar and selecting Task Manager option.

Now go to Details tab in Task Manager and look for MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe process. You may find more than one instances of MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe process running in Task Manager as shown in following screenshot:

Click on each instance of MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe service and press Delete key on your keyboard. You can also click on “End Task” button given in Task Manager. It’ll terminate MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe process.

Now close Microsoft Edge browser and then relaunch it. Now open Microsoft Edge Update page. As soon as you access the update page, Microsoft Edge will automatically relaunch MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe process in background and now it should be able to find new available updates and download/install them without any issue.

Following screenshot shows the Edge browser was able to download and install new updates without showing any error message:

  1. Hello VG, I’m having a problem with downloading anything from the Internet. It’s not the downloading issue I have but after it has downloaded the file, be it an image, software, word file, anything on your desktop. When I right click on it and select properties, I have to check the box below to “Unblock”.
I don’t mind doing it, but is there a way where I can select all the files at once and right click and select Properties and check the Unblock? Better yet if there is a way to disable the Unblock feature windows 10 uses? Thanks.

  2. ^^ I’ll try to post an article for it. In the meantime, you can use following command in PowerShell to unblock multiple files at once:

    dir E:\Downloads -Recurse | Unblock-File

Where “E:\Downloads” is the directory name containing blocked files. Replace it with your directory path.

  3. Thank you very much. It worked and I was able to update Edge browser by following your instructions.
