[Microsoft Edge] Update Policies are Configured but will be Ignored because this Device isn’t Domain Joined

Two days back Microsoft released version 90 of its Chromium-based browser “Microsoft Edge” and after updating the browser in my Windows 10 device, I’m noticing following error or warning message on Microsoft Edge about page:

Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined.

When the “About Microsoft Edge” is opened using any way such as 3-Dots Menu -> Help and Feedback or main Settings page, Microsoft Edge displays above mentioned message below the installed version number as shown in following screenshot:

This message is usually displayed in testing builds of Microsoft Edge such as Beta or Developer version but somehow the same message is being displayed on official Stable version of the browser.

The latest version of Microsoft Edge is already installed and the browser is showing Up to date message. The device contains Windows 10 20H2 operating system and it is also up to date.

I also checked whether I applied any policy on Edge manually using Registry Editor. Any applied policy for Microsoft Edge Update is stored under following registry key in Registry Editor (regedit):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate

The key was present in Registry Editor but didn’t contain any String or DWORD values which means there was no policy applied on Microsoft Edge Updater in the device. I deleted the EdgeUpdate key from Registry Editor but the error message on Microsoft Edge About page was still present.

I also tried to repair Microsoft Edge using Control Panel -> Programs and Features as well as Windows 10 Settings -> Apps -> Apps & Features page.

But it also didn’t change anything.

Microsoft Edge stable is still showing “Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined” error message on About page.

I think it’s a Microsoft server side issue and should be resolved soon.

  1. My “v90.0.818.39 (Official build)” running on 20h2 Home displayed the same message when I just checked (2021-04-18 7:55am CDT) and also Edge started updating. After restarting it was “v90.0.818.41” and the same message still appeared.

  2. Yes, I’m seeing “Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined”.

  3. I run at 90.0.818.41 and saw that message too, but then I updated to 90.0.818.42 and the message disappeared now

  4. I’m in 90.0.818.42 (Official build) sometimes showing the message but sometimes no. So I agree, it’s more like a microsoft server issue

  5. I also see the message after a manual “force” update (By clicking Help and Feedback) and moving to 90.0.818.42.

However – a much bigger issue now is that NONE of my 10 instances of Edge will auto update at all following this past Patch Tuesday. I am fully aware of Edges three update services and two tasks that are placed in Task Scheduler to automatically update Edge – but since this weeks patches – not a single machine has moved past the version that was installed as of this past Tuesday (89.0.774.77)

My services are running normally and the tasks are executing on time and successfully but no workstation is ever moved to 90.0.818.39 or 41 or 42. They all are “trying” to update per the services and tasks – but never actually get an update.

    Sonic.

  6. VERY RECENT also in Microsoft Edge
    Version 90.0.818.42 (Official build) (32-bit)
Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined.

  7. Microsoft Edge
    Version 90.0.818.42 (Official build) (64-bit)
Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined.
Microsoft Edge is up to date.

What if anything do I need to do?

  8. Microsoft Edge
    Version 90.0.818.46 (Official build) (64-bit)
Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined.

  9. I am getting the same message also. Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined.

    Microsoft should sort it out.

  10. Same here on 2 machines, also i notice i don’t have the new download experience, still download bar at bottom (90.0.818.56)

  11. I have the same message on all my PCs.
I noted the following explanation in a Microsoft EDGE forum, answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/msedge_other-msedge_win10/microsoft-edge-update/7ec8ffb8-298c-41ea-96e0-1409e26a0e62

    In particular:
Q: I also contacted Microsoft Support team online regarding this, and they told me domain means company devices with restrictions set by company’s I.T. Therefore, that message of my device is NOT domain joined, means no company’s network is shared with me. Therefore, based on that answer i think i have nothing to worry about, right?
A: You don’t have anything to worry about. Stay safe and Goodbye.

In conclusion: the message can be ignored

  12. Yes, I get the same “Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined. ”
Microsoft Edge version 90.0.818.66 (Official build)(64bit)
    Thank you

  13. Me too: “Update policies are configured but will be ignored because this device isn’t domain joined.”

I had run a utility. I ran it in its most conservative mode, but I wonder if it might have caused this message.

  14. So still this does not tell us how to correct the problem of device not domain Joined . What needed is how to make it ” domain joined” How about making a video so all of us can correct this error, Right now Microsoft not being very helpful with answering this question with a solution. Lots of us people have inquired about this , How about fixing this Microsoft?
