[Fix] Stuck on Old Windows 10 Insider Preview Build, New Builds Not Available on Windows Update

Many AskVG readers have reported us in past that they are unable to upgrade to latest Insider Preview build via Windows Update in their Windows 10 computers. Whenever they check for new builds using Windows Update, it always shows “You’re up to date” or “Your device is up to date” even though they are using old Insider Preview build in their device.

Since Windows Update doesn’t show new Insider Preview builds, the users are unable to download and install new builds and stuck on old builds in their computers.

When they try to modify Insider Preview builds channel or ring using Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Insider Program page, it doesn’t work. The options are either stuck or grayed out.

In past we posted a tutorial to fix similar kind of issue. You can find the tutorial at following link:

[Fix] New Insider Preview Builds of Windows 10 Not Showing on Windows Update

The above mentioned tutorial is very old and might not work in newer Windows 10 builds, that’s why we are sharing a new working trick to fix such kind of issues. Thanks to our reader “Sandra” for sharing this workaround.

If you are also stuck on previous Windows 10 Insider Preview builds and can’t upgrade to new builds in your computer, following method will help you in fixing the issue. Once you follow the method, your computer will be able to detect new available Windows 10 Insider Preview builds and you’ll be able to upgrade to latest build without any problem.

1. Press WIN+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box. Now type regedit and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

3. In right-side pane, look for any DWORD or String present. If you find any DWORD or String present specially “ManagePreviewBuilds” DWORD, delete it. You can also change its value to 2 if you don’t want to delete it.

Restart your computer and now check Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Insider Program page and you’ll be able to change or select between different Insider Preview rings such as Dev, Beta and Release Preview.

Once you select appropriate ring, check for new updates using Windows Update and it’ll successfully download and install new Insider Preview build in your Windows 10 device.

  1. I joined the Windows Insider program today and the system let me update itself to build 19042.662 but did not let me go any farther. The key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate was not present in the registry and the system would not allow me to update further, even though I added the key WindowsUpdate and rebooted. I am trying to get to build 20262 since I am on Windows 10 Home Edition and I need WSL 2 which is only available on that release.

  2. I also have Windows 10 Home and was in the same position as Jonathan Gossage. I turned on Developer Mode in Settings/Update & Security/For developers and now after refreshing updates I’m downloading Windows 10 Insider Preview 10.0.20262.1010 (fe_release).
