[Review] Which DTH Service Provides Maximum HD Channels in India?

UPDATED on June 25, 2017: Addition of Maa Movies HD channel on Tata Sky and Airtel.

Ever since we posted our exclusive reviews and comparisons between India's major DTH (Direct-To-Home) services and also shared secret tricks to access hidden service menus in their set top boxes, various readers have asked us about the availability of HD (High Definition) channels on different DTH platforms.

People regularly send us emails asking whether a particular HD channel is available on their desired DTH platform or not. So today we decided to post another exclusive review and comparison list of all HD channels available on all Indian DTH platforms.

In this topic we'll tell you how many HD TV channels are available in India and which DTH service provides the maximum number of HD channels to its subscribers. It'll help you in deciding which DTH service provider is best for you.

We have 7 DTH service providers in India:

  • Tata Sky
  • Dish TV
  • Airtel Digital TV (ADTV)
  • Videocon D2H
  • Reliance Digital TV (RDTV)
  • Sun Direct
  • DD Direct+ (now renamed to "DD Free Dish")

DD Direct+ aka Free Dish is a free-to-air satellite service in India, actually its the only FTA satellite service in India. It doesn't provide any HD channel.

Following is the exclusive list of all HD channels available in India along with their availability on above mentioned DTH platforms:

NOTE: We are counting only true HD channels here. Dish TV claims to have maximum HD channels but some of them are upscaled HD channels not true HD channels. Upscaled HD channels are modified versions of SD channels with a little higher bitrate but you'll not notice much difference between SD and upscaled HD channels. Upscaled HD channels will never provide high picture quality as true HD channels do.

NOTE: The plus sign '+' indicates availability of Dolby Digital (DD) Surround Sound.

So if we look at the number, Tata Sky provides the maximum number of HD channels. Dish TV, Airtel Digital TV, Videocon D2H and Sun Direct are close to it. Do we need to say anything about Reliance Digital TV?

So the list of winners based on maximum number of HD channels is as following:

1st - Tata Sky (82)
2nd - Airtel Digital TV (67)
3rd - Dish TV (66)
4th - Videocon D2H (58)
5th - Sun Direct (54)
6th - Reliance Digital TV (12)
7th - DD Free Dish or DD Direct+ (0)

NOTE: Reliance Digital TV doesn't provide DD sound on any HD channel. DishTV provides DD sound on very less number of HD channels (only 23 channels). On the other hand, Tata Sky (60), Airtel (56), Videocon (40) and Sun Direct (48) provide DD sound on almost all available HD channels.

Exclusive HD Services List:

  • Tata Sky has launched exclusive "Tata Sky Experience HD" channel available free of cost to all subscribers. It offers 24x7 HD content, through high quality HD content snippets across key genres such as Hindi entertainment, English entertainment, Hindi movies, knowledge, lifestyle, kinds and sports.
  • Tata Sky has launched exclusive "Tata Sky Bollywood Premiere HD" channel which showcases one Hindi movie premiere every week, along with some premium movies.
  • Tata Sky has launched exclusive "Tata Sky Kids Cinema HD" channel available free of cost to all subscribers. Its a special movie service which telecasts Indian and international kids specific movies break free.
  • Tata Sky has launched exclusive HD+1 channels for Colors, Sony, Zee TV, Star Plus, Star Gold, Zee Cinema and Sony Max which broadcast TV shows and movies with 1 hour delay of the same respective HD channels. It'll provide an opportunity to viewers to watch their favorite shows and movies twice or immediately if they missed it by an hour.
  • Videocon has started 2 new VOD (Video-On-Demand) HD channels "D2H Cinema HD" and "D2H Hollywood HD" which telecast latest Bollywood and Hollywood movies in HD. But they don't provide DD Sound.
  • Tata Sky has launched 5 Showcase HD channels which are PPV (Pay-Per-View) channels and telecast latest Hollywood and Bollywood movies in HD but without DD sound.
  • Tata Sky has also launched 3 Star Sports Add On Service HD channels which are event-based channels and telecast live Football matches.
  • Airtel has launched 2 Airtel Movies HD channels which are PPV (Pay-Per-View) channels and telecast blockbuster movies in HD but without DD sound.
  • Dish TV has launched Dish Buzz HD channel which telecasts Dish TV offers, advertisements and promotions.

One more thing to add! Videocon D2H and Airtel Digital TV provide 24x7 3D channels "D2H 3D Channel HD" and "Airtel Movies" respectively which show programs and movies in 3D format. Tata Sky has also started showing 3D blockbusters on its event-based channel "Showcase 3D" but its not a permanent channel.

We'll update this list whenever new HD channels become available on any DTH platform, so keep checking this page regularly...

  • Hi there;

VG - Congrats on providing useful Tips to quickly know whats the best DTH HD ..

We need a Connection in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

Do you think TATA SKY would be BEST deal , I decide so based on your reviews.

Ppl do revert if you feel TATA SKY is not good in these areas, cos i recently heard some connect issues. I need your tips as you all seem genuine users. MOST reviews are by PAID TROLLS..!

Thanks once again to ALL & VG.

    Much Regards

    AJ

  • VG

^^ Tata Sky service is quite good. Check the plans and channels in all DTH and go with the one which fits best for your requirements.

  • Hi VG,
Thanks a lot for this comprehensive list. You have covered every aspect of the DTH quality and based on this sheet I opted for Tata Sky HD.

I must say that i am extremely pleased with this connection. I have opted for the Grand Sports Pack and i get 39 HD channels including Star Premiere HD. The only ones missing now are the HBO Premium Channels (hits & Defined) and they are available for 99/month.

It's a treat to come back home and watch movies or programs via the HD channels provided by Tata Sky. I just wish more HD channels become available in the near future.

Thanks again for your hard work.

    Cheers,
    John

  • Hey VG, Thanks! Your review really helped me a lot as i was well confused between airteldth, dishtv & tatasky, will go with tatasky for now.

  • Thank you for this informative comparison article. This is a really handy piece of information for making a better, informed choice. Once i look at this I can confirm that Tata Sky is my DTH of choice . Saved more than an hour of my time!

  • DishTV HD quality is the worst among all. Star Sports Select HD1 added today but quality seems to be like SD channel. Also when I replaced Videocon D2H with DishTV, initially I thought it was my mistake to observe the low picture quality of DishTV HD channels. But again I recharged Videocon just to check. HD quality is uncomparable for these two. Videocon HD is way better, cleaner and sharper.

  • Its official. Videocon d2h to merge with Dish TV to create a TV distribution behemoth. Following the closing of the proposed transaction, the merged entity will be renamed as Dish TV Videocon.

  • Dish TV and Videcon d2h now merged how long will I take the Dish TV HD Subscribers viewers to get the 19 unavailable HD channels in its platform ??

  • VG

It'll take some time in merging and completing the official formalities. Only then we can expect addition of all remaining channels.

  • Dear VG,

On the Merger of Dish Tv and Videocon d2h and what has transpired from the Interview to CNBC TV18 last weekend, Dish TV India Managing Director Jawahar Goel said

1 ) “The two brands Dish TV and Videocon d2h will continue to operate as distinct brands in the market,”

2 ) Goel pointed out that the merger will likely take around seven to eight months.

In view of the above , any hope on the early addition of non-available HD channels on Dish TV can be laid to rest, at least for seven to eight months. Though Dish will add the HD channels that is in Dish /Zee stable like Zee Bangla HD , Zee Bangla Cinema HD and other regional channels ,in HD formats, for which they have obtained licence from Min. of I & B

    Regards,

  • Hi,

Which service provider broadcasts in true HD (1080P)? or are all service providers giving upscaled SD (1080i)? I live in Bangalore and considering Tatasky, Dish or Airtel. Whats your recommendation?

  • @Shaf,

You can go for either TATA Sky or Airtel. DishTV is having the worst pic quality. They say 1080i, but the pic quality is not even like 720p. If you want more HD channels opting TATA Sky will be wise decision.

  • Airtel has recently launched the best HD offer
(Unlike Tata Sky HD and Videocon D2h in which you can only see those HD channels whose sd channels are subscribed and to pay additional Rs.175 in tata sky to watch those HDs so to see almost all hd channels you have to pay almost RS.600-700 along with the sd channels which anyone would not watch after subscribing the same channel in hd)
Airtel launched myhdplan in which you can choose the HD channel you want
Like in Rs.225 plan you can chose any 51 hd channels of your choice
with a base pack in my case its Base-99 myhdplan- 225(51hd channels)
so in total Rs.324 i can watch almost all hd channels if I exclude the south indian channels
i would get around 10 more hd channels to add so can also add the upcoming hd channels in future

  • Magicbricks Now has become Mirror Now and the genre has changed from property business news channel to a general news channel with focus on civic news. The channel will cover subjects like crime, women’s safety, traffic woes and civic issues such as cleanliness, health, environment, power and water. The channel is being launched on the erstwhile Magicbricks Now platform, which is already present on all leading cable and satellite networks. With the addition of new / change of genre of old channel, any hope of Times Now HD channel maybe put to rest for near future

  • Sony is launching a new kids channel SONY YAY after IPL and as per reports in media SPNI ( Sony Pictures Network India ) is launching 10 New Channels this year including 5 Sports channels will be of Kids, Music , entertainment and infotainments.

  • ^^SPNI launching total 10 channels :: 5 Sports Channels and rest 5 channels will be of Kids, Entertainment, infotainment, music

  • Yes i think its time to move from videocond2h to tatasky they have shutdown 4k channel pricehike good for nothing wasting paying 680 for new south platinum hd package

  • Taxation on entertainment, cable and DTH services shall come down under the Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) regime as the entertainment tax levied by states has been subsumed in the GST

The GST Council has finalised 18% on Cable and DTH Services. Currently it is ranged between 10-30% across the states over and above the Service Tax Levy of 15 %.

So, it can be expected that the DTH Package charges are likely to come down

  • Actually, Tata Sky has hugely benefitted owing to an oversupply of spectrum after one of ISRO’s satellites failed to ‘terminate’ as scheduled.
Tata Sky was reportedly using 432 MHz of spectrum on INSAT-4A and was behind Dish TV, which had 648 MHz and Videocon D2h, which has 540 MHz. INSAT-4A was expected to reach ‘end of life’ this year, for whose replacement ISRO sent GSAT-10 to the same orbit.

Both satellites however are working simultaneously. Owing to ISRO's reported dilemma of neither being able to sell capacity on its new satellite nor on the old (about to die) satellite to a new player, Tata Sky has been allowed to use both satellites, and adds up to about 828 MHz of spectrum at its disposal, which is almost two times of what DTH operators have in India.

So, Till ISRO decides on the fate of the old satellites Tata Sky HD Subscribers like us can enjoy this bonanza ;)

  • D Sports showing on the Tata Sky ( Channel#495) doesn't carry 'HD' on its logo. Is it actually a Real HD channel or just an Upscaled SD Version ?!?! Moreover Cineplex HD has been removed , so does FTV India. TS might have informed its viewers over some non descript , lowest circulation regional newspaper but it would have done no harm to its profile if it could be done over alerts or SMS or E-mails to its subscribers . Can the TS subscribers expect a bit more transparancy ?!?

  • VG

^^ D Sport only provides HD feed. Other DTH companies are downscaling it and providing SD feed. Tata Sky is providing original HD feed.

  • Thanks VG for the information on Only HD Feed of DSport. Why Miniplex HD and FTV was removed by Tata Sky is not known or TS is not bothered to inform it's subscribers

  • Star is rejigging the channels and dropping the HD and SD Channels. On eve of the Champions Trophy ,Star Sports Tamil 1 has replaced Star Sports 4 while Star Sports Select 1 has replaced Star Sports HD 4. Both Star Sports 4 and Star Sports HD 4 has been discontinued from 28 May.

Star Sports Select 2 will replace FX, which is being discontinued from 15 June, along with FX HD and Star Movies Action. So, 1 SD Channel in place of 1HD and 2 SD channels

Star Sports Tamil and Star Sports Select 1 has been launched on 28 May while Star Sports Select 2 will launch on 15 June. The Tamil channel will also be home to the Tamil Nadu Premier League, which aired on Star’s second Tamil GEC Vijay Super last year.

As per the new tariff regime, Star Sports Select HD 1 and HD 2 are priced Rs 12 each, which is lower than other Star Sports HD channels, which are priced Rs 19 each.

The new tariff comes into force from 1 September subject to Madras High Court order on whether the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has the jurisdiction to frame tariff for TV channels.

Star Sports network will now comprise five SD channels including two regional and five HD channels. Earlier there were 6 HD and 4 SD Channels.

In the Age of HD viewing the decision to drop 2 HD channels and replace them with SD channels is baffling as Star has the telecasting rights of international and local events like the International Cricket Council (ICC), Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia, England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC); Pro Kabaddi; Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL); the Hero Indian Super League (ISL), Premier League, Bundesliga; Badminton World Federation (BWF) events, Premier Badminton League (PBL); Hockey India League (HIL); Formula 1; Wimbledon, The French Open and International Premier Tennis League.

  • Zindagi channel will be shifted from Television broadcasting to VoD ( Video on Demand ) on OZEE VoD platform of Zee from July 1st. So, 1'less Hindi GEC from July. Earlier Animax and MTv Indies taken the Digital route from TV broadcasting

  • Any idea when would Cartoon Network HD would be launched in India? I believe, they have the necessary approvals. We have very low animation content available in HD.

  • VG

^^ Currently there are no news about CN HD channel.

  • ^^VG: Thanks for [ultimately] doing the needful!

^^Amit Mitra: Couldn't Agree More! In fact, what was more 'baffling' was that Star is certainly not doing it for ratings in case of FX (as almost always deemed to be/is the case). And speaking of which, I recall a hilarious [and rather upsetting] incident on a well-respected DTH forum (I chose to not name it here) was that bunch of all who reacted positively to this news (which were almost all of those who reacted there) were only filling their messages with negative remarks by saying indirect stuff such as "good decision to close non-performing channels," "failing channels have to die," yada-yada-yada. Although, believe it or not, I belong to that rare specie which doesn't throws its prejudices upon others so I'm not gonna say all but some were clearly Star Sports "fan[atic]s," as apparent from their excitements over the rumour. What I found both "hilarious" and "upsetting" (excuse the oxymoron) was that by doing so, they were showcasing their 'genius' and bringing upon the 'glory' of concerned Mods. Now, back to the main point, but given not 'genius' thingy but any sensible and knowledgeable person could figure out after a bit of brainstorming-session that fault lies in the channel's business model, the very same channel which constantly stays ahead of its primary sibling in Top 5 of ratings charts. And about Star as a whole, yes, sources indicating only one channel launch and none about the others also raises questions over FX HD's closure, since they were the pioneers in HDTV campaigning since years. Certainly, they've toned-down their campaign in recent times as is the case with any other, but still don't forget to remind viewers with on-screen banners [in non-sports networks] and also quickly-reminding through either a less-than-1-second lasting statement on every SD sports channels programming promos and also, via 5-seconds long visuals and voiceovers reminding viewers of HD option for some non-sports channels.

Moving on to the next, yes, Zindagi, another [so-called] "premium" channel which will bite the dust this month. I really found some interesting programming on it lately. But what's its connection to HD, here?*

*Curious Question: Would you mind me asking why are you 'bearing the pain' to update comments section with "off-topics" developments here? I mean I understand that they have loose-connections to HDTV broadcast most of the time and many already are doing the same by making this section as "advice column" (read buying-guide). But there seems no point in parodying them, is it? Also, you aren't getting any appreciation or positive-comments for making all such efforts since the 'pop-Internet' world is too 'lazy' for that.

  • @MAAZ KALIM. First I would like to comment on your comment
"why are you 'bearing the pain' to update comments section with "off-topics" developments here?" . It's because I burnt my fingers ( and pocket ) in subscribing to DTH Platforms since 2005 and Cable Operator since 2000 and just I do not want Any Subscriber to go the same way as I did. I just want them to be aware of the latest or incoming developments ( of addition / deletion of channels HD/SD ) if I notice something on the public domains. I was a Tata Sky Sky Subscriber from 2005-2012 and as they were not adding channels ( shortage of Transponders ) in spite of repeated requests and follow ups I migrated to Videocon d2h. They were initially good with the quality of channels and most importantly picture quality. As I have a FHD TV , I wanted the New HD Channels to be added on their platform, which they didn't. I switched over to Dish after this as they had the Maximum HD Channels at that time. Not happy with the picture quality though , I carried on with Dish as they had the Maximum HD channels. My logic is simple : when I opted for the Maximum SD+HD package and pay for that why shouldn't I get the Maximun Nos. of HD Channels. Dish started lagging behind in adding new HD Channels. In spite of repeated follow ups they didn't improve. As Tata Sky surpassed them in nos. of channels and Dish was not bothered I switched back to Tata Sky. I watch TV maximum 2-3 hrs in a day in average but I feel terrible when I could not watch the favourite programme/s as the channel was not provided in the platform to which I am paying. I had kept 2 connections simultaneously all along this period ( Cable+DTH ) and DTH +DTH ( One with the Maximum Channels Package and One with the Minimum Price Package) so that I don't miss any favourite programme in the minimum leisure time.

Hope I could make it clear that I didn't act as a buying guide for any DTH as I burnt my finger from all of them. I have absolutely No Axe to Grind nor do I have anything at stake with any DTH operators.

On Star TV, Star India has recently surrendered seven TV channel licences it had received in 2015 to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB). Apart from Star’s seven licences, three more licences were surrendered to the MIB by three different companies. The ministry had granted 10 new licences to Star under the names Star Sports Marathi, Star Sports Bengali, Star Sports Malayalam, Star Sports Tamil, and Star Sports Telugu in standard definition (SD) as well as high definition. From Today FX HD, FX and Star Movies Action has been taken off the air. The reason of addition or deletion is definitely linked to the TRP /TAM ( in other words profitability in business ) . I think FX HD and FX had niche audience , less in numbers in terms of TRP being the reason of their closing

Finally, I do not think that I did do any crime by sharing information on Channels Additions or Deletion if it any way helps a fellow subscriber. If talking about SD channels ( associated with HD feed ) is prohibited or 'off the topic' as you had called , the Administrator is free to block / edit the posts.

  • FX HD is still on air / has not been shut down as yet , was supposed to from June 15th when the SD feed went off the air or showing recycled programme ?!?

  • VG

    ^^ It'll be discontinued on July 20.

  • ^ And Star Gold Select SD replacing FX HD ?

  • VG

    ^^ Most probably yes.

  • any update on jiodth

  • ^^Amit Mitra: Seems you got offended by my words. Sorry about that, since that wasn't my intention whatsoever! Now coming to your responses:

Oh, I didn't knew you got that much agonised. Maybe you might have told the same to someone else, but as you might've noticed, Mr VG ("the Admin") periodically keeps deleting comments to possibly avoid cluttering so presuming you did, there was no possibly-ethical way of reading that. I too have very 'ancient' history with DTH, dating long back to early 2004, to say the least. Although I must admit, I was never 'activist-types' as you (i.e. switching over DTH service providers). And by the way, your story is very intriguing, for non-DTH forumites I mean. Moreover, even I purchased dishtv)'s new connection [again] impulsively in early 2015 and repenting since TATA|sky™ started 'beating them to dust' because: A) I didn't have such a fancy customer-service experience with them over my life anyways. B) Of course, I wanted access to more HD channels for the same price. And so far, I've done umpteen number of requests, pleas and threats regarding channel additions and technical issues when watching Zee®'s competing channels, they still haven't heeded to 85% of my pleas/reports. This, in spite of being one of their "premium" subscribers (I have long-standing record for recharging much ahead before Recharge Date, so long that now I'm their long-term subscriber*). And I couldn't resonate more with your sentiment[s] for not being able to watch programming of choice merely because of channel's unavailability on service provider's platform since I'm going through the very same nowadays. And you seem courageous and determined enough, that's why you have 4 connections in total. 2 active, 2 inactive. I only have Cable+DTH, both active (on 2 different TVs). Moreover, I was being pressured by my family members to switchover to TATA|sky™ for a long period of time, but I resisted because I was afraid it could spoil the beauty of terrace on my newly-constructed home we shifted to just ~3 years ago.** In fact, an activation voucher (which I got as an add-on with the purchase of a UHD™ TV) of it is still lying around my heaps of documents somewhere. Back to your own story, believe me I was very serious when I said it is "very intriguing," wish you could have provided more precise details about the timeline.

You also seemed to have taken offence over my usage of the term "buying guide." But I can't comprehend it anyhow since it is a very respectful term, far from disparaging. Hoping you would understand.

Yes, I'm already aware about Star® surrendering 7 of its granted-licences to save on their fees. 😉 But dunno about those "three different companies," do you? And directly jumping to the point about FX® network to avoid over-lengthening this post [for points already raised], I wholeheartedly-disagree. Your usage of a word as strong as "definitely" is hinting towards a confirmation-bias. TAM®, an erstwhile monopolistic audience-measurement agency, was already deserted by industry's bigwigs (like a "sinking ship") since the advent of BARC and ultimately merged its ratings-measurement business with the latter. Moreover, the reason I disagreed with your conclusion about ratings being the reason behind Star®'s shocking decision because it's *actually* not very obvious [one] i.e. the ratings. FX®, a SD channel usually had more GRPs than its competing "primary" counterpart, Star World®. 'Funnily' enough, in the very same week Star® made this annoucement public [in English-newspapers only], FX® ranked 2nd in ratings and Star World® was nowhere to be seen in the ‘Top 5’ list. In fact, I very much doubt any of their programming managed to earn a spot in any place of ratings-data released via other channels (not TV ones), thus having proved for earning a "respectable" TRP. In fact, it was indeed very surprising coming from TRP-audience that it's preferring critically-acclaimed content over mediocre ones. And I opine that content was their obvious King! Else, my personal experience says there was no other reason why FX® was worthy of "premium" tag. Their content-delivery mechanisms and practices were so horrendous that I was just bearing to watch it because their content-library wasn't available elsewhere on [linear] Television. So what's the actual reason, you may ask? Let me firstly confess this that I deliberately withheld earlier what I'm going to reveal now. While I won't use words such as "definitely" in order to not project myself as judgemental, but I assert that I have confidence in my reasoning[s]. Reasons include: A) Most likely, Star®'s [latest] business model for the FX® network was to have zero-advertising. Ineffective to say, shorter breaks, too. Unlike using DOGs to their advantage like news and sports channels/networks, they even didn't have affiliated sponsors. In simple terms: No "presented by", "powered by" or {Amazon Fashion Doctor Who} (read title sponsorship), yada-yada-yada advertisers, nothing!*** Thus, the only revenue-stream for them was subscription fees. And any "TV buff" should know that what it means to broadcasters in India. Add to that, the "curse" named carriage-fee! B) If "fanaticism" is anything that works in real-world (beyond Word-of-Mouth, of course), then there was "fanat[ical]"-pressure on Star® by predominantly self-professed "football fans" across the country who were unwilling to pay additionally for watching their favourite football-events on Select™ range (at the time) of Star Sports® channels. So, if numbers actually did what they ("fan[atic]s") were shouting, then it obviously lead Star® on back-foot. Especially after captaincy-change of their sports business (as is mostly the case with any business that undergoes management-change).

Lastly, I never implied anywhere like that. Why did you felt so? Would you please elaborate? I promise I won't mind if you had a bad day or something. And over your claims of only posting about those networks with HD channels, I can have my reasonings but then it may seem like a nitpicking [to you, for instance]. So, like the "FX® India" story, I'll leave it for now rather describing it since I don't want any arguments/heated-debate. Over the usage of "off-topics[sic]," I don't believe that was exaggerated or needless at all. After all, I consciously used it only after being aware of its accurate-definition. Sure, it is Admin's perogative to take action on his discretion on his site, but I wasn't moaning (read complaining). In fact, I asked so out of concern, not to demean you, ridicule your efforts or something else which you might've prejudiced against me. Moreover, AFAIK, there's no [explicit] comments-policy on this site [as of now] dictating "off-topic" submissions to be deleted or modified, so I don't know where that's coming from.

*Only talking about that particular connection.

***Even more advertising-free than international channels, which have some of their programming sponsored by committed international advertisers.

P.S. Look, I'm still maintaining the chronological-order while replying. So if you do intend to reply, may I kindly expect you to follow your regime, at least, if not mine?
