[Windows Tip] Remove “Details” Tab from File Properties

In previous tutorials, we have told you how to remove unwanted tabs from file/folder properties windows. We shared methods to remove “Previous Versions“, “Customize“, “Sharing“, “Security” and “Compatibility” tabs from properties window.

Recently an AskVG reader asked us about removing “Details” from files properties window. When you right-click on a file and select Properties option. You get “Details” tab in properties window. The “Details” tab shows useful information about the file such as file name, file type, file size, folder path, file creation and modification dates, attributes and owner details.

Sometimes you may want to hide the “Details” tab from files properties window to restrict people from getting these details about any file.

Today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to remove “Details” tab from files properties window.

If you also want to get rid of this tab, following steps will help you:

1. Press “WIN+R” key combination to launch RUN dialog box then type regedit and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\

3. Under “PropertySheetHandlers” key, you’ll find {883373C3-BF89-11D1-BE35-080036B11A03} key. This is the key which is responsible for showing “Details” tab in files properties window.

4. Delete this key and it’ll immediately remove “Details” tab from properties window of all files.

NOTE: If you are not familiar with Registry editing and want a ready-made Registry script to do the task automatically, download following ZIP file, extract it and run the extracted REG file. It’ll ask for confirmation, accept it:

The ZIP file also contains a restore registry script to restore the “Details” tab in properties window.

  1. Hi, this tip only works on the computer on which the registry is changed, right? what if I send the file (say a word doc) to somebody else, will they be able to see the details? is there a way to prevent windows from putting any information into the details tab?

  2. ^^ Yes. The trick only removes Details tab in the computer having the above mentioned registry key.

    You can try to click on “Remove properties and personal information” link given in Details tab.
