Download Windows Terminal 1.17: Command-Line Tool with Multiple Tabs and Panes Support

Windows Terminal is a new modern and open source command-line/console app officially released by Microsoft for Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems. It was under development and testing since almost one year and now the final stable version is available for download to public.

Windows Terminal is highly customizable. You can modify its Settings (text file) to have transparent background with acrylic blur (similar to Aero glass transparency effect) or set any wallpaper as background image. It supports custom themes, styles and configurations.

Windows Terminal supports PowerShell, Command Prompt and WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux Terminal) command-line tools. You can launch any of these command-line tools using Windows Terminal app. Just click on the drop-down menu button present in the titlebar.

It supports multiple tabs and multiple panes. You can open multiple tabs in a single Terminal window. You can also create multiple panes in a single Terminal window and open them side-by-side. To open multiple tabs, click on the New Tab (+) icon present in the titlebar. To open multiple panes, press Alt+Shift+D keys together.

You can also press Ctrl+Shift+F keys together to open search box.

Other features include Unicode and UTF-8 character support, a GPU accelerated text rendering engine and the ability to create custom themes and customize text, colors, backgrounds, and shortcut key bindings.

Windows Terminal utilizes GPU to render its text. It provides faster and smoother experience when using the command line. This renderer also supports Unicode and UTF-8 characters which allows to use the terminal in different languages while also displaying emojis. The default font of Windows Terminal is set to Cascadia Mono.

Windows Terminal can be downloaded from Microsoft Store or from GitHub releases page. Starting in July 2020, Microsoft will release monthly updates for Windows Terminal.
