Windows 11 Moment 5 Update (Fifth Feature Drop) Available for Download

Yesterday i.e. February 29, 2024, Microsoft officially released the next major feature update for Windows 11 to public. The feature update is referred as Windows 11 Moment 5 Update, 5th Feature Drop or February 2024 update by tech enthusiasts.

Many people also consider these moment updates as service packs for Windows 11, so it can also be referred as Service Pack 5 (SP5) for Windows 11.

The Moment 5 update’s KB number is KB5034848 and it changes/increases the build number of Windows 11 to 22621.3235 on 22H2 and 22631.3235 on 23H2 devices.

The last feature update i.e. Moment 4 update for Windows 11 was released on September 26, 2023 which also brought many UI changes and features to Windows 11 devices.

What’s New in Windows 11 Moment 5 Update or Fifth Feature Drop

Following are the main features and highlights of the new feature update for Windows 11 as mentioned officially at Microsoft website:

• Improvements to Copilot: Plugins support for easy access to applications, ability to dock, undock and resize the Copilot pane and new AI editing capabilities. (How-to Enable/Disable Guide)
• Improvements to Android Phone Link: Users will be able to access recent photos on their PC as well as use their mobile phone as a webcam on all video conferencing apps. The Phone Link settings page has been renamed to Mobile devices under Settings > Bluetooth & devices page. (More Info)
• Improvements to Voice Access: You can now use voice access with following languages: French (France, Canada), German, Spanish (Spain, Mexico). You can now use all voice access features on multiple displays. This update also introduces voice shortcuts or custom commands. You can use them to create your own commands in the supported English dialects.
• Improvements to Narrator: You can now listen to a preview of the ten natural voices before you download them. This update also adds new keyboard shortcuts (G and Shift+G) to move between the images on a screen. In Microsoft Word, Narrator will announce the presence of bookmarks and draft or resolved comments. You can now also use voice access to open applications, dictate text, and interact with elements on the screen.
• Improvements to Windows Share: This update changes the apps that appear in the Windows share window. The account you use to sign in affects the apps that are in “Share using”. The Windows share window now supports sharing with WhatsApp in the “Share using” section.
• Improvements to Nearby Share: This update affects how Nearby Share turns on and off. You can use quick settings or the Settings app to turn on Nearby Share. This update improves Nearby Share transfer speed for users on the same network. You can now give your device a more friendly name to identify it when sharing using Settings > System > Nearby Sharing page.
• Improvements to Casting: This update helps you to learn about the Cast feature and discover when it is available.
• Improvements to Snap Layouts: This update adds suggestions to  Snap Layouts to help you to instantly snap multiple app windows together. You can hover over the minimize or maximize button of an app (WIN+Z) to open the layout box. When you do, app icons will display various layout options to help you to choose the best layout option. • Improvements to Widgets: Using the new Widgets board experience, users will be able to create a focused board and organize Widgets into distinct categories. (How-to Disable Widgets)
• Improvements to Windows Ink: Support for new apps and languages including Photos, Paint, WhatsApp and Messenger.
• Improvements to Windows 365 Boot and Switch: Dedicated mode, brand customization, etc.
• This update adds support for the USB 80Gbps standard. It is the next generation of USB4 that has twice the bandwidth of USB 40Gbps. To use USB 80Gbps, you must have a compatible PC and USB4 or Thunderbolt peripheral.
• This update affects games you install on a secondary drive. Now, they remain installed on the drive.
• This update affects the Windows Backup app. It will no longer show on the user interface in regions where the app is not supported.

Following issues are fixed by Windows 11 Moment 5 Update:

• This update addresses an issue that affects long-edge fed printers. The alignment of stapling or hole punch locations is wrong.
• This update addresses an issue that affects the Windows Settings Home page. It randomly stops responding when you go to the page.
• This update addresses an issue that affects networking. A device fails to make the automatic switch from cellular to Wi-Fi when it can use Wi-Fi.
• This update addresses an issue that stops a system from going to sleep. This occurs when you connect an external device to the system.
• This update addresses an issue that affects Notepad. It does not open for the standard user account. This occurs when you use cmd.exe to open it based on file type association.
• This update addresses an issue that affects 8 Zip archives. It stops you from opening them by double-clicking them in File Explorer.
• This update addresses an issue that affects the CrashOnAuditFail registry value. When you set it to one (1), only admins can sign in to a machine that has stopped working. After you install this update, standard users can sign in to the machine.
• This update addresses an issue that affects Azure Virtual Desktop virtual machines. At random, they restart. This occurs because of an access violation in lsass.exe.
• This update addresses an issue that affects a machine that is used as a remote desktop session host. You get stop error RDR_FILE_SYSTEM (0x27). Because of this, all users are signed out from the machine.
• This update addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Edge. The UI is wrong for Internet Options Data Settings.
• This update addresses an issue that affects an embedded SIM (eSIM) profile. When you delete it, you do not get a notification.
• This update addresses an issue that affects Remote Desktop Web Authentication. You might not be able to connect to sovereign cloud endpoints.
• This update addresses an issue that makes the troubleshooting process fail. This occurs when you use the Get Help app.
• This update addresses an issue that affects the Certificate Authority snap-in. You cannot select the “Delta CRL” option. This stops you from using the GUI to publish Delta CRLs.
• This update addresses an issue that affects Steps Recorder. Some of the UI and steps are not localized to Chinese.

Moment 5 Update is available as an optional non-security release or configuration update which is installed using the new servicing technology called Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR).

Interested users (seekers) can manually download and install the update by clicking on “Check for Updates” button present on Settings -> Windows Update page. Make sure to enable the “Get the Latest Updates as Soon as They’re Available” toggle option if you want to receive the update right now in your device.

The update will appear as KB55035942 on Windows Updates page and will change/increase the build number of Windows 11 to 22621.3374 on 22H2 and 22631.3374 on 23H2.

Microsoft will make the new update broadly available to all editions of Windows 11 by the April 2024 security update (Patch Tuesday) release.

The same features will also be a part of the upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2 which will be the annual feature update for Windows 11. It’ll be released later this year.
